Ubuntu GNOME 14.10 Beta 1 (Utopic Unicorn), an official Ubuntu flavor based on GNOME 3.12, has been officially released and is now available for download and testing.

The first Beta for the upcoming Ubuntu GNOME 14.10 release is out and lets users play with some of the new features and packages that will be made available. It's still rough around the edges, but that's normal and it shouldn't be a major issue.

"We're preparing Ubuntu GNOME Utopic Unicorn (14.10) for distribution in October 23rd, 2014. With this Beta 1 pre-release, you can see what we are trying out in preparation for our next (stable) version. We have some interesting things happening," said the devs in the announcement.

According to the changelog, the new Ubuntu GNOME 14.10 Beta 1 now comes with the coveted GNOME Shell 3.12, and gnome-weather and gnome-maps are now installed by default. A number of problems still remain and they will get fixed in time for the release.
