Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr), an official Ubuntu flavor based on GNOME 3.10, has been officially released and is now available for download.

This is the first LTS release for the developers of Ubuntu GNOME and, understandably, it is a very important version. The fans of this distribution have eagerly awaited for the new release in the series, especially because this is a major update for Ubuntu GNOME.

Even if it didn't have too many fans when it started, Ubuntu GNOME managed to get quite a following and now it's one of the most used Ubuntu flavors.

“Ubuntu GNOME is an official flavour of Ubuntu, featuring the GNOME desktop environment. Ubuntu GNOME is a mostly pure GNOME desktop experience built from the Ubuntu repositories. This is our very first Long Term Release (LTS) version,” said the developers in the announcement.

Unlike the Kubuntu developers, who managed to squeeze in, at the last minute, the new KDE 4.13 version that was released just a day before, the Ubuntu GNOME developers had no choice but to integrate GNOME 3.10 in the distro and not 3.12. The reasons for this decision have been explained well before the official launched of the distro.

Just like the base distro, Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) integrates one of the latest Linux kernels available, although it's not actually the latest one released. For reasons beyond the developers’ control, they have to settle with the 3.13.x branch.

According to the Ubuntu developers, Ubuntu 14.04 comes with the 3.13.0-24.46 Ubuntu Linux kernel, which is based on the v3.13.9 upstream stable Linux kernel. This means that Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 LTS uses the same version.

The system requirements for this flavor of Ubuntu were also posted and, despite of what users might think, they are not that high. You will need a 1 GHz processor (Intel Celeron or better), 1.5 GB of RAM (system memory), 7 GB of free hard drive space for installation, a CD/DVD drive or a USB port for the installer media, and Internet access (optional).

The developers also explained that most of the GMOME 3.10 packages are in place. The ones that haven't made it can be installed from this repository: ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3.

Also, the gnome-weather, gnome-maps, gnome-photos, and gnome-music packages are available from the repositories and the GNOME Classic session is included by default.
