There are no new features available with this release

Ubuntu GNOME 14.04.2 LTS (Trusty Tahr), an official Ubuntu flavor based on GNOME 3.10, has been released and is now available for download. The developers have upgraded a number of important packages, but nothing related to the desktop environment.

All the Ubuntu LTS flavors get updates at the same time, and the same is true for the GNOME edition. Even if it only comes with three years of support (five for Ubuntu and some of the other flavors), Ubuntu GNOME will get the same amount of point releases as the rest of them do. In fact, the last one will probably be made available soon after the release of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

There are no new features introduced into this upgrade, the only major component that's been upgraded is the Linux kernel. That, in itself, is an important achievement because it brings support for new hardware and provides better performance all around. Stuff like the GNOME stack remains the same.

One of the most important things to remember is that users don't really have to do anything extra if they already have the operating system installed. All they need to worry about is updating the system on a regular basis and that will take care of everything.

"By default, the 14.04.2 point release will ship with a newer 3.16 Linux kernel from Ubuntu 14.10, and a matching X.org stack. This is based on the 3.16.0 Extended Upstream Stable Kernel Release. The purpose of providing a newer kernel in the 14.04.2 point release is for hardware enablement," is noted in the official announcement. Of course, all the updates that have been made since the original release in April 2014 will be integrated in the new ISO image.
