A call to all artists to contribute to Ubuntu 10.10

Today, July 7th, Canonical proudly announced that it will support the Ubuntu Free Culture showcase, which will offer photographers, artists and musicians from all over the world and with any background, the opportunity to see their work in the next release of the Ubuntu operating system, Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat), due for release in October 10th, 2010.

Ivanka Majic, Canonical's head of design, said: "We are committed to the idea of 'Art in the Open' at Ubuntu. The work we do in an open environment delivers the same quality as closed ones and we believe will be even more successful through tapping into this wide world of volunteer contribution."

All artists who never participated in such an open project are encouraged to contribute their work to the Ubuntu Free Culture Showcase. A Creative Commons license will be attached to the winning artwork, along with the artist's name. The winning artwork will be exposed to millions of users worldwide.

"We want graphic designers, musicians, photographers and creatives of every stripe to feel they have a place in the Ubuntu project. Very often without being employed by a vendor, they cannot meaningfully contribute to the tools they use or the OS they consume. With Ubuntu and Open source, we hope they realize that it is different and that that difference is important." - said Ivanka Majic in the press release.

Canonical encourages all contributors to use open source software for their artwork, but this is not a requirement. All artwork must be submitted until the end of August 2010.
