The superphone from Canonical did not get enough traction in order to become reality

Ubuntu Edge did not manage to get the necessary funds in order to become a reality, but this doesn't mean that Canonical had anything to lose. If anything, the company will come out as a winner.

Mark Shuttleworth has invested a lot of time and money into this IndieGoGo campaign, to say nothing of his personal image. In the end, it seems that it wasn't enough.

The IndieGoGo campaign for Ubuntu Edge ended with a little over $12.8 million (€9.6 million), which is a lot less than the needed $32 million (€24 million). They've tried all kinds of combinations and they've managed to get some pretty big hitters from the industry interested, but it was to no avail.

Canonical did manage to get the Linux community interested in Ubuntu for Android and we can only hope that they will manage to release it sometime in the future.

In case you weren't up to speed, Ubuntu Edge was a phone designed by Canonical to take advantage of the latest technologies. More details about the price and the campaign can be found in our initial report.
