Steam for Linux is approaching a final release and Valve has already included the official supported distribution, Ubuntu 12.04, into the Steam Hardware & Software Survey for the month of December.

Every month Valve publishes some interesting statistics about the Steam users’ hardware and software configurations.

Even if Steam for Linux is not out of the Beta phase, it has made it into the survey and the results are pretty interesting.

Ubuntu 12.10 takes up 0.12%, Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS has 0.13%, Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 64-bit is at 0.26%, and Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit is at 0.29%. That would put the number of Linux users at about 450.000 players.

Even if it’s a generous estimate, you will have to keep in mind that the Steam for Linux is not out of Beta. When it becomes final and a lot of other distributions will be able to run it properly, the numbers will increase.

You can check out other statistics on Valve’s official website.
