The Release Candidate version of the upcoming Ubuntu 9.04 (codename Jaunty Jackalope) was uploaded a few minutes ago on the official mirrors. As usual, we've downloaded a copy of it in order to keep you up to date with the latest changes in the Ubuntu 9.04 development.

What's new in Ubuntu/Kubuntu 9.04 RC? Well, not much has changed since the Beta release, only various software updates and many bugfixes. We also decided not to publish any more screenshots, as nothing has changed on the artwork part, and you already know from previous screenshot tours how Ubuntu 9.04 will look. This Release Candidate has the brand new GNOME 2.26.1 desktop environment, which brings lots of fixes and a few improvements.

There is also good news for Wacom tablet users, as these devices will be automatically recognized and enabled. However, the configuration for button mapping isn't supported at the moment (it can be set only manually if the user adds an fdi file in /etc/ha/fdi/policy). The kernel packages were updated to version 2.6.28-11.14, based on Linux kernel 2.6.28.9.

On the other hand, Kubuntu 9.04 RC (Jaunty Jackalope) is built on top of the KDE 4.2.2 desktop environment.

Once again, a Live CD is available for everyone who wants to see for themselves what's new in Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu 9.04 RC (see below for download links), without installing anything on the hard drive. See you again on April 23rd for the final release of the Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) when we will showcase, once again, all its new features!

Ubuntu 9.04, or, should I say, "The Jackalope," will be the tenth release of the Ubuntu operating system. Here's the release schedule for Jaunty Jackalope:

November 22, 2008 - Alpha 1 release
December 19, 2008 - Alpha 2 release
January 16, 2009 - Alpha 3 release
February 5, 2009 - Alpha 4 release
February 26, 2009 - Alpha 5 release
March 12, 2009 - Alpha 6 release
March 26, 2009 - Beta release
April 16, 2009 - Release Candidate
April 23, 2009 - Final release of Ubuntu 9.04

Ubuntu is a Linux distribution for your desktop or server, with a fast and easy install, regular releases, a tight selection of excellent packages installed by default, every other package you can imagine available from the network, and professional technical support from Canonical Ltd. and hundreds of other companies around the world.

I have a soft spot for Ubuntu because it was my first experience of Linux. However, I have gone over to Mint because it looks so much better than Ubuntu. Mint has a glossy modern look while Ubuntu has an old-fashioned 80s look about it.

Liking Linux Mint more is perfectly fine...I do, but don't disrespect Ubuntu, since Mint is just a remix of Ubuntu.

What's the difference between this release and the one coming out in a week? If I'm going to get the new release, does it matter if I get it now?

Comment #2.1 by: Marius Nestor on 22 Apr 2009, 10:35 GMT

The final release will have some updated packages... You can get this version and update it (System -> Administration -> Update Manager) tomorrow night... but the servers will be overloaded :)

You can make Ubuntu look exactly the way you want it and it's not that difficult.

Try Ubuntu again, it looks better and better every release.

ScottishGirl, that's cool, but you can configure ubuntu to look just like any other distro with themes and compiz fusion etc. I find myself coming back to it because of the wonderful forums which contain answers to almost any problem I've ever had with linux.

Not for me... unfortunately! I've got to stick with Hardy, wich was the last version to support my Intel i845 video card running Compiz. Sad... I was hoping Jaunty could give me back my visual effects, but no...

Ubuntu has always been the linux i love...thats because it was my first as i was a linux virgin before it came...
It looks nice, 70s orange and leather jackets style...i dont like Linux Mint as it looks kinda dodgy...especially the christmas sound it plays when it starts...not to mention the look never changed..

Comment #7.1 by: kiwisoup on 23 Apr 2009, 06:44 GMT

The sound is not at all "christmas" sounding to me, that's a really odd comparison...I like that it less "tribal" sounding than Ubuntu. As for it looking the same and never changing...You do realize that Ubuntu has looked the same as well, right? AND you can make it look however you want. You can make Linux Mint look and sound like Ubuntu if you really wanted to. That's what's so great about Linux, lol. Programs like mintMenu and mintUpdate are amazing. I am running Ubuntu 9.04 with these two programs installed until the new Linux Mint comes out in a month or two.
