August 14th, 2008 - Alpha 4 release

For the Intrepid Ibex, the development team will prepare an unbelievable desktop, with an amazing performance, that will work on mostly any computer (be it a high-end workstation or an old and dusty Pentium III machine). Another major feature planned for Ubuntu 8.10 is the ability to stay connected to the Internet (to read: wireless connections) wherever you go: "We want you to be able to move from the office, to the train, and home, staying connected all the way." - said Mark Shuttleworth.

"...working on almost any computer...."
Maybe, but not on a MEDION MD96640 as far as Release Alpha 4 + sudo apt upgrade is concernde.
No sound, no wired connection (out of the box), a display: max 850 .... (impossible on some windows to "Cancel" or "Apply" or "YES", because inaccessible).
I did a reinstallation (besides Win Vista and release apha 4) of 7.10 on the same laptop and there is sound and a wired connection.

It's an alpha, what do you expect? Alphas will never work all in situations. That's why alphas are released, to test for regressions in new software and/or kernel. Did you even report the bug(s) before blabbering about its, perceived, incompetence? Atleast then something could be done about it. Next time wait till the beta or rc is out before commenting...

Is the graphic card+screen size identification problem observed in previous releases finally corrected ? Every time I tried to install Ubuntu or Kubuntu on my 1440x900 VGA LCD, it was identified as a 640x480 screen, so I could not even see nor click the buttons on any configuration panel. Being told that the analogic VGA connextion was the cause of the problem, I finally got a 1650x1050 DVI screen only to discover that the problem persisted with Ubuntu 8.04 :-(

May I attempt things with more success with Ubuntu or Kubuntu 8.10, or would that just be the waste of one mode CD or DVD ?

My screen : Asus MW221U LCD 22
My card : NVidia 7600 GS

Thanks for any help ! :-)

to Paganel76:

Since 8.04. The display identification has been solved. I installed Hardy (8.04) on so many different computers and it worked beautifully.
On my latest build, it is the only OS that has all drivers up and running right after installation. Not xp or osx could make that claim.
