Steve Langasek announced a few hours ago the second maintenance release of Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron), which (in case you forgot) is supported with maintenance updates and security fixes until April 2011 on desktops, and April 2013 on servers. Ubuntu 8.04.2 LTS brings to its dedicated users a lot of security updates and corrections (over 200), all with a single goal: to keep Ubuntu 8.04 LTS a stable and reliable Linux distribution!

"In all, over 200 updates have been integrated, and updated installation media has been provided so that fewer updates will need to be downloaded after installation. These include security updates and corrections for other high-impact bugs, with a focus on maintaining stability and compatibility with Ubuntu 8.04 LTS." - said Steve Langasek in the official release announcement.

Highlights of Ubuntu 8.04.2 LTS:

· The hdparm power management was set to 128 for all hard disks while on battery, and 254 while on AC (please note that the suspend/resume functions still crash this and a complete fix will arrive in the third maintenance release of Hardy Heron);
· Added support CDs with compressed packages, which will allow everyone to upgrade to future release using CDs;
· Updated the MySQL 4.1 packages, which will allow a smooth upgrade from Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (Dapper Drake);
· Repaired the checksum recheck, after reset, for Asus Eee PC 1000;
· Fixed a Pidgin issue with ICQ connections;
· Added support to boot from degraded RAID devices;
· Printing to remote ipp:// printers is possible again.

For the complete list of the changes, please check the official release notes.

Hi there!
I've a doubt... I'm currently running Hardy Heron 8.04 on my laptop, Will it be automatically updated to the 8.04.2 one?, or Do I need to do something?

Thanks you!

Hello! The system will not be upgraded automatically to 8.04.2.

To upgrade to another Ubuntu version follow the detailed (with screenshots) instructions from here:

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading

Good luck!

The short answer is yes.

The point releases (8.04.2) is a roll-up of all the updates that have been sent out, along with new hardware support. This is all rolled up into a new CD so that a user doesn't have to apply over 100 updates the minute they boot their new Ubuntu 8.04 system.

So if you have 8.04 installed you do not need to do a new install of 8.04.2

Sorry to say, that this answer doesn't fit to the question.

Dox (and I) want to upgrade to 8.04.2 and not to 8.10.

I made all updates untill today and I don't want to re-install Ubuntu from skratch. I just want to have all updated and bugfixed releases. What't to do if anything at all?

Thank you in advance

Sorry... I forgot to tell you that on the second screenshot (Software Sources) you need to choose the "Long term support releases only" option! After that... 8.04.2 should appear as an upgrade option. Just try it and see if it works :)

Also, Steve George is right... if your 8.04 or 8.04.1 machine is up-to-date.. there is no need to upgrade to 8.04.2.

I had not updated my system since September, but the 8.04.2 release showed up only as a large number of updates when I used Synaptic Package Manager to check things.

After everything was installed, the version is listed as 8.04.2 and the package manager asked if I wanted to upgrade to 8.10, which was a bit late.

My captcha I got was 5+6 -7. While this is still very simple math, I'm sure theres many excited youngsters that come on here, maybe aged 10 or 11, who may not be able to do this math, and therefore can't post. I know I was online when I was 8 looking at these kinda things, but I never could have found out what 5 + 6 - 7 equals. Then again, I'm sure the kids could just google it..
