Today, you will learn how to install Ubuntu Gutsy (as a second operating system) on your PlayStation 3 gaming console. For those of you who think for a second (and who are scared) that this will replace their PS3 operating system, well you guys are wrong, because this will NOT erase your PlayStation 3 native operating system (called XMB) and it will run as an alternative OS on your PS3 console. Ready? Are you excited? Let's go! Things needed:1. An USB flash drive or a Memory Card (PS3 can read only SD/miniSD Memory Card, Memory Stick PRO (Duo) and CompactFlash). Or, as an alternative, you can use a portable hard disk with FAT32 filesystem on it. 2. An USB keyboard and mouse attached to your PS3. 3. Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) PS3 ISO image, which you can always download from Softpedia. You will need to burn this ISO image on a blank CD with your favorite CD/DVD burning tool. WARNING: Be aware that if you continue, all the saved games, game data, bought games, downloaded demos, PlayStation Home settings/installation and any data (music, movies, pictures) saved on the hard drive of the PlayStation 3 will be permanently ERASED. However, the PlayStation 3 settings will NOT be lost. Therefore, we strongly suggest that you back up immediately any saves of your games, hard drive movies, pictures, music or PlayStation Home data on a removable HDD device or USB stick! The bought games or downloaded demos can not be copied, but you will be able to re-download without the need to buy them again, as they are stored on your PlayStation Network account.Prepare your PlayStation 3 for Ubuntu:You will need to partition the PS3 hard drive, otherwise you will not be able to install Ubuntu. Power on your PS3, Log in and go to "Settings -> System Settings", scroll down until you find the "Format Utility", press X on it and go to "Format Hard Disk" (last option). You'll be asked if you want to format your hard disk, so press "Yes" and then you must choose a partition setting for the hard drive. Select the "Custom" option, then select "Allot 10GB to the Other OS" entry and do a "Quick Format". When it's done, reboot your PS3. The KBoot installation:As I don't have an USB flash drive, I've used an external hard drive for this operation, and it worked like a charm. Create a folder, on your USB stick (drive),
called PS3, and inside this folder create another one called OTHEROS. Put the otheros.bld (otheros.bld for PlayStation 3) file in the OTHEROS folder. Now, go to "Settings -> System Settings -> Install Other Os" and hit X to detect and install KBoot. Boot and install the Ubuntu PS3 Live CDAre you wondering how to access what you've just installed above? Go to "Settings -> System Settings -> Default System" (press X) and select "Other OS". You'll be asked if you want to quit your PS3 system and start the other OS (of course you do), so choose "Yes" and wait for the PS3 to reboot. You should attach the USB keyboard and mouse to the PS3. In a few seconds, you will see "Ubuntu PS3 KBoot Loader" text on the top of your screen. Insert the Ubuntu PS3 Live CD in your PS3, type install and wait for the Live CD to load. In a few seconds, you will see that sexy wallpaper of Ubuntu Gutsy and the installation wizard will appear. Follow the installation steps from here if you don't know what to do. Go back to the PS3 OSTo get back to your PS3 OS, restart Ubuntu and, at the KBoot prompt, type: boot-game-osand hit enter. Wait for the PS3 to reboot and you'll see the XMB (PlayStation 3 operating system). ConclusionsUbuntu Gutsy Gibbon has greatly been improved for the PS3 hardware. It can now recognize all the components of your PS3 console, like the Blu-ray unit, the Gelic network card, USB and Bluetooth ports, and the sound system! Even if the installation part takes around 40 minutes (four times longer than on a regular PC), Ubuntu proved to be quite fast on the PS3 console. From the screenshots below, you will see that I can listen to music, watch movies and even transfer files from my BlackBerry, via Bluetooth. However, as I don't have a HD Ready TV, I can't really enjoy Ubuntu on my PS3, that's why the screenshots are so small! Pros:- It will recognize all the hardware components of your PS3 console. - It runs quite fast. - Easy to install. Cons:- The installation takes too long. About four times longer than a normal PC installation! - When you want to reboot Ubuntu, it will actually shut down. I don't know why it does this, maybe it's a problem that happened only to me. - You must have an HD Ready TV in order to do something useful in Ubuntu. With regular TVs you will have a 576x460 resolution and you will not see the entire window of most applications!

| Comment #1.1 by: tmel173 on 01 Jul 2008, 03:49 GMT | I am a novice linux user and recently I recently downloaded ubuntu 7.10 for ps3 and tried to load it on my ps3. I followed the instructions as per article on this forum but unfortunately my instaalation came up with an error message
"No default root fs was found, or one was found and didn't contain a message= config file.
If no root fs was found you can enter the shell here with 'sh' .exiting will return you to this prompt .In the shell you can mount your rootfs as /mnt/root/.
reasons this may have happened include :
- No drive drive woth a root fs was actually found
- Your rootfs does root fs does not have the correct volume label of "/"
- your rootfs is corrupt (use a rescue cd to fix this).
CAN someone OUT THERE PLASE HELP ME I CAN'T USE MY PLAYSTATION ANYMORE

| Comment #1.2 by: liam on 23 Mar 2009, 17:24 GMT | hi ,
if you are stuck in the kboot option or just stuck, turn the ps3 off then whenn turning it back on hold on top the power button longer than you usiually would. you know how it only gives one beep when it starts up normally? when you hold onto the power button, wait for the second beep , then let go . i have hdmi and it says "a hdmi connection has been detected . would yo like to use audio and video (or something like that ) via hdmi. i click yes then it asks to auto resolution and i press no . hope this helped. |
| Comment #2 by: Alex on 09 Dec 2007, 17:38 UTC | reply to this comment | 40 minutes is an average Ubuntu install with default options. My install takes a little over an hour and a quarter because of the slew of programs I use on a regular basis. |
| Comment #2.1 by: Kanna on 08 Jul 2008, 23:13 GMT | I get the same thing every time, and do you happen to own the 80GB model, because i own it and i don't know anyone that have successfully installed Ubuntu with the 80Gb model. |
| Comment #2.2 by: kerbdog on 13 Aug 2008, 00:06 GMT | I got it to install but i can't get the ethernet to work. I tried changing the settings to dchp and saved but still not connecting. I do have a standard tv if that makes a difference. |

| Comment #4 by: Brandon on 09 Dec 2007, 19:45 UTC | reply to this comment | You let me know when I can run Mac OS X on a PS3, and I'll go out and buy one of those $500 systems immedeately. |
| Comment #4.1 by: Guest on 07 Oct 2011, 02:00 GMT | Not very bright are ya? It would need some serious mods to handle a Mac OS. Not to mention, Mac OS would be the worst thing for it. It would completely defeat the purpose of it being a gaming machine. Linux is about as far as one would want to go with it really. Mac OS is a tough system to work with, and most of the population doesn't have a clue how to work on it, and most places that repair pc's won't even touch anything thats mac. |

Actually... my HD Ready TV is giving me that resolution... and i cant fix it. |
| Comment #6 by: me on 09 Dec 2007, 22:58 UTC | reply to this comment | Can't see the whole application window? Press Alt and then click-drag anywhere on the application window. With Ubuntu (GNU/Linux), the window sticks with the mouse so you can see everything and still be functional at low resolutions. |
| Comment #7 by: Jeff on 10 Dec 2007, 01:13 UTC | reply to this comment | Is there any way to add compiz to this version of ubuntu on the ps3? I would LOVE to have a 3D desktop on my HDTV. |
| Comment #8 by: Xbehave on 10 Dec 2007, 02:24 UTC | reply to this comment | Brandon let me know when mac os X has drivers for anything usefull otherthan and ill consider buying one of those $300 operating systems.
if you just want a mac os x experience on a ps3 then simply install avant with 3d dock under kubuntu and select mac like programs!
9/10 mac users dont 'understand' the difference :P |
| Comment #9 by: madjr on 10 Dec 2007, 04:40 UTC | reply to this comment | thanks for the article i know what to buy this xmas now :)
ill just plug in my widescreen lcd monitor. It's cheaper than an hdtv anyway and you can always convert your monitor to a tv with some cheap tv converter devices. |

| Comment #11 by: joost on 10 Dec 2007, 16:19 UTC | reply to this comment | any information on why I would want to have ubuntu on a gaming console? |
| Comment #12 by: Sixback on 10 Dec 2007, 21:46 UTC | reply to this comment | Anyone running Myth Frontend 20.2 Gutsy 7.10 on the PS3 ? |
| Comment #13 by: Harry on 10 Dec 2007, 22:12 UTC | reply to this comment | I don't know about Gutsy but video playback was really poor on Feisty. Smaller videos such as that in the final screenshot above might be OK, but higher quality stuff was choppy as hell. Sony doesn't open up it's graphics cards to 3rd party OSes for acceleration from my understanding- has something changed in Gutsy? Seems unlikely.
I was jazzed at the idea of using my PS3 as a media box, but this route was a dead end. In brighter news, though, Sony has said they'd include Divx (and presumably xvid) support in a future firmware update. |

| Comment #15 by: Mike on 11 Dec 2007, 10:53 UTC | reply to this comment | I get an error message at the end of my install :
something along the lines of: "The servermirror is not available or does not have a valid 'Release'-file. Try another servermirror"
the installation will not proceed under any circumstance. I think it might have to do with my internet connection? I have a static IP adres, the internetconnection is NOT wireless.
Since i'm new to this I've been googling about but I can't find a decent answer. Lil help ? thanks! |
| Comment #15.1 by: marius.nestor on 11 Dec 2007, 11:07 GMT | Hi! Choose another country (close to you or not) at the beginning of the installation wizard. It seams that there is a problem with the server from the country you've chosen. |
| Comment #16 by: Chris on 11 Dec 2007, 12:12 UTC | reply to this comment | Great Guide!
But I've got a small question. What about updates? Because this is an optimized version do I have to install the OS everytime again when there is a update or will they be pushed through the update manager in ubuntu?
Yeah Compiz Fusion would be great :) But access to the 3D functionality of the PS3 is still in it's ealry stages... but there has been some recent progressions... so maybe in the future... |
| Comment #16.1 by: marius.nestor on 11 Dec 2007, 12:57 GMT | Hi! Thank you!
I don't know if you can upgrade to a newer version of Ubuntu... But we will know in April, when Ubuntu 8.04 will be available ;) |
| Comment #17.1 by: marius.nestor on 11 Dec 2007, 12:55 GMT | No! Sorry... |
| Comment #18 by: Andrés on 11 Dec 2007, 14:58 UTC | reply to this comment | @joost
With Ubuntu in your PS3 you can play movies (regardless of codec/format), music (with a good player that shows covers, lyrics, wikipedia pages...), surf the web (with a good browser), watch pictures, write texts... All that you can do with a computer (with Ubuntu)
Anyway, in my opinion, if you don't know why you would want Ubuntu in your PS3, then you don't want it |

| Comment #21.1 by: marius.nestor on 17 Dec 2007, 07:06 GMT | For the installation process you need a USB one... and I think you can easily use a bluetooth keyboard when the system is up and running. |
| Comment #22 by: berenger on 17 Dec 2007, 15:39 UTC | reply to this comment | I had a problem in 7.04, the instalation kept crashing at 15% on my PS3
Anyone know if this has been fixed in 7.10? |
| Comment #22.1 by: marius.nestor on 17 Dec 2007, 15:46 GMT | No problems here... with the installation. You should give it a try ;) |
| Comment #23 by: berenger on 17 Dec 2007, 16:59 UTC | reply to this comment | ok, good news..it installed with no problems..
The bad news...I cant change the resolution?? I have a full 1080P LCD (1920x1080) but for some reason it is stuck in 576? also it would seem that the wireless doesnt work either.. I can use ethernet so i'm not fussed with that, i just want to change the resolution?
Any help would be great. |
| Comment #23.1 by: GRiTy on 23 Feb 2008, 00:31 GMT | Hi you have probably sorted this by now but to change the screen res you need to stop the Gooey (GUI) and make your changes then start it back up again, you need to edit a file to make the changes permenant. I installed mine with the command
"install video=ps3fb:mode:x" replaceing "x" with the supported resoultion 3 = YUV 60hz 720p and 35 = RGB 60hz 720p. etc. |
| Comment #24 by: trsn on 18 Dec 2007, 00:47 UTC | reply to this comment | the main reason that I wanted to install Ubuntu is to use the Internet. But Wi-Fi won't work! Disappointed. |
| Comment #25 by: ImardBruceLee on 19 Dec 2007, 12:49 UTC | reply to this comment | I can't change the resolution on my 1080i TV either. Looks like it a "design feature" which makes it pretty much useless. Shame. Hope this is fixed soon |
| Comment #26 by: Ole on 20 Dec 2007, 00:55 UTC | reply to this comment | Help!! I did as it said in the guide, but never see "Ubuntu PS3 KBoot Loader" text on the top of the screen. And now I cant start the normal ps3 system. What do I do? |

| Comment #26.4 by: frank on 27 Aug 2008, 19:18 GMT | im haveing the same problem if u fixed it how can i fix mine i cant even reboot by hold the power button |
| Comment #27 by: Rory on 21 Dec 2007, 17:12 UTC | reply to this comment | A couple quick comments:
1. The 2.00 firmware on ps3 breaks the wifi with ubuntu - this can be fixed by upgrading the kernel (a bit complicated, but something that comes with the territory when using linux)
2. screen resolution is not locked at 576x480 by any means - but it is a bit cumbersome to change. i found instructions over on psubuntu.com |

| Comment #29.2 by: Marius Nestor on 18 May 2008, 08:25 GMT | Download the Ubuntu 7.10 ISO for PS3 and burn it on a CD. This one:
http://cdimage.ubuntulinux.org/ports/releases/7.10/release/ubuntu-7.10-desktop-powerpc ps3.iso
NOT the one for Desktop PC! |

| Comment #30 by: on 08 Jan 2008, 19:45 UTC | reply to this comment | Hey guys i have a quick question.
so when i am partitioning the HD (for installing ubuntu on ps3) whihc option should i choose.
"manual", or "guided- use entire disk /dev/ps3da -10.7 GB unknown."
Using "guided- use entire disk /dev/ps3da -10.7 GB" will it uninstall the old OS (ie the ps3 OS)?
Thanks in advace |
| Comment #30.1 by: marius.nestor on 08 Jan 2008, 20:41 GMT | Hi!
Use guided - use entire disk! Don't worry, it's not the whole hard disk... it's the 10 GB partition only ;)
The XMB (PS3 OS) is not installed on the hard drive guys! So don't worry so much... the PS3 hard drive is used only for storage (game saves, game demos, game backups, pictures, movies, wallpapers....etc) NOT THE XMB |

"There are two methods to installing Wine in Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon
1. Install Wine from Ubuntu's own repository, older but offically supported version.
In a terminal type:
sudo apt-get install wine
2. Add Wine's own repository and download the lastest bleeding edge version.
In a terminal type:
sudo wget http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/sources.list.d/gutsy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.list"
But i dont no what it means???
Any help would be appretiated cheers. |

| Comment #39 by: Raihan on 07 Feb 2008, 11:55 UTC | reply to this comment | The latest firmware update for the PS3 (v2.0) for some reason removes wireless configuration from your PSUbuntu Network Manager.
The solution is to upgrade your kernel using the linux-kernel-2.6.23-rc7_tools package.
Here’s how to do it:
Get the tar file and copy it to your PSUbuntu Desktop (use a usb-stick or other media)
Extract the files and run the .deb files linux-headers.., linux-image.., and wifi-radar (wifi-radar not necessary?)
Reboot, and your wireless network shold be available again.
If anyone has any idea as to why this happened, or if there are other ways to get Wifi back, let us know!
Raihan. |

| Comment #41.2 by: Marius Nestor on 18 May 2008, 08:20 GMT | The PS3 can see CDs!
papaboo, download this file:
http://cdimage.ubuntulinux.org/ports/releases/7.10/release/ubuntu-7.10-desktop-powerpc ps3.iso

| Comment #42.1 by: GRiTy on 23 Feb 2008, 00:13 GMT | Hi it sounds like a problem with the disk you have created or the version of Ubuntu. It must be the Power PC / PS3 version. If you definately have the correct version then it could be corrupted. I downloaded this iso "tinyurl.com/yotq3g" (you may need to disale search from the address bar, or type the HTTP:// first). The KBoot loader i got here and used a pen drive for "tinyurl.com/2eupvt". The ISO can be burned with a double click with Nero 7. Hopefully this will help. |

| Comment #46 by: George on 22 Mar 2008, 23:54 UTC | reply to this comment | I used the guide from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PlayStation_3 to install Ubuntu, I burned a cd with the second cd image (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/7.10/release/ubuntu-7.10-desktop-powerpc ps3.iso) and it's working ok. No need for a usb stick.
If you're having a HDTV see this link to set your resolution during install https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PlayStation_3#head-95ccefd88716c577bee34d178624c6a073e73444 .
The video card is "locked" on PS3, linux can access it through an abstraction layer that removes most advanced features of the video card, this means no 3d (compiz included) and also there is choppy playback of movies because most players used a feature from the video card to resize the movie but as they don't have access to it, it's done software. There are some workarounds for the playback performance in work now but I don't think we'll see a stable version if repositories too soon. |

| Comment #48 by: Jake on 31 Mar 2008, 22:18 UTC | reply to this comment | I installed on my new 40GB UK ps3 using guides on the net. My install took about an hour, and then upgrading the system took another 90 minutes. Seems incredibly slow really. Also my wired network didn't come up by itself (was greyed out), which may well be the problem Mike had in comment #15. To get it up, I have to manually type in a terminal (go to applications menu, accessories and choose terminal (for matt comment #38)) and type:-
sudo dhclient eth0
which seems to then work fine.
Haven't decided what to do with it yet, I'm one of those without an HDTV (yet). I actually bought my TV just before the standard fully got started, so it has a DVI port and is a high res LCD, but has none of the horrible HDMI decryption chips, so HDMI to DVI adaptor doesn't work.
Since the new 40GB PS3 doesn't have PS2 compatibility I'm going to try the PS2 emulation software under Linux, but I don't hold up too much hope of getting any decent results (due to Sony not allowing Linux proper access to the hardware) |
| Comment #49 by: Sean on 06 Apr 2008, 02:39 UTC | reply to this comment | Can someone help me with this? A few days ago I installed this from another website ( http://psubuntu.com/wiki/SetupPS3 )
It was the same instruction, I downloaded all the necessary files, I put the ISO on the CD-ROM and the file (otheros.bld on PlayStation3) on a USB stick. I did the system settings part, created the extra 10GB slot, put the cd ina nd installed in like 5 seconds. I can't remember if it booted after that but then I went back to settings and ran the Other OS. It rebooted, then a black screen came up and said:
This is an Ubuntu Live CDROM
…
If in doubt, just press Enter.
kboot: _
I put the CD-ROM in with the iso file and hit enter, and nothing happened. I also hit every button on my SIXAXIS controller but the lights would just keep blinking red. I rebooted about 10-15 more times and kept trying but nothing ever happened. What am I doing wrong? Any help please... |
| Comment #49.1 by: Marius Nestor on 06 Apr 2008, 07:34 GMT | Hi,
I think you use a normal Ubuntu CD... You must download the special version for PS3.... here -> http://cdimage.ubuntulinux.org/ports/releases/7.10/release/ubuntu-7.10-desktop-powerpc ps3.iso
Download it, burn it on a black CD, insert it on your PS3 and it should definitely boot.
BTW, the PS3 controller dosen't work when you are on the Other OS... You must attach an USB mouse and keyboard!
If you want to return to the XMB (PS3's operating system), type:
boot-game-os
and hit Enter. |

I left it on overnight and it was still there. I've reformatted (full) and done this again and it still doesn't work. I am using an HDTV that is 1080i, p compatible. I'm using the mode:5. I did install Ubuntu once without changing the video mode and I got it to install, but now that I am using this command I can't get it to work. Any suggestions???
Thanks for your time.

| Comment #53.1 by: Joerg on 11 Jun 2008, 06:56 GMT | Here is a solution to the "freezes at 15%" problem:
I used "install video=ps3fb:mode:3" (720p) at the boot prompt.
Mode 4 (1080i) and Mode 5 (1080p) seem to cause it to get stuck at 15%. The "ubuntu" boot logo was corrupted at 720p, but the installation went smoothly.
You may be able to change the resolution later. |

| Comment #59 by: J1Man on 23 Jun 2008, 04:09 UTC | reply to this comment | Haha, the editor did something wrong with the installation, he's missing one step.... Instead of just typing "install" on the Kboot prompt, he should have manually adjusted the resolutin by including the "video-ps3fb:mode:11" after the "install" prior pressing the enter key..... like I said, it doesn't matter what tv or monitor you have, if you didn't manually adjust the resolution in the kboot promt, you'll get the default resolution of 576, which means you won't be able to see the other half of the screen.... LOL |

| Comment #61 by: chris vella on 04 Jul 2008, 01:16 UTC | reply to this comment | Hey guys - I've put ubuntu on my machine ages ago, and after the 2.40 upgrade my ps3 was screwy... kept locking up, crashing in games and getting error while sswitching to the XMB. The fix is apparently to reformat the drive. I backed up my game data then reformatted the drive. It restarted OK the first time but I turned it on just now and it's gone to the ubuntu boot up screen. The problem is I no longer have a keyboard to boot out of it and I was wondering if there's another way of getting back into the XMB without a keyboard, like writing a linus shell script and booting it off the USB key or something? |

| Comment #66 by: Damaen on 07 Aug 2008, 01:49 UTC | reply to this comment | Hey guys, I've noticed that the resolution changing is a bit poorly explained, so i'm going to make it easy. Took me a few tries to figure it out. to change the resolution, you'll have to change it at the Kboot screen, when it first loads up. You have to type in the following:
install video=ps3fb:mode:X
now... where "X" is, is where you type what resolution you want/can handle. I personally can do full 1080p The following is a list of resolutions. The numbers in front of them represent the one you want.
0:auto mode
YUV 60Hz 1:480i 2:480p 3:720p 4:1080i 5:1080p
YUV 50Hz 6:576i 7:576p 8:720p 9:1080i 10:1080p
RGB 60Hz 33:480i 34:480p 35:720p 36:1080i 37:1080p
RGB 50Hz 38:576i 39:576p 40:720p 41:1080i 42:1080p
VESA 11:WXGA 12:SXGA 13:WUXGA
Since I have a 1080p capable tv, I would type the following:
install video=ps3fb:mode:5
see? "x" is now "5", which is the option I can use because... well my tv is cool like that.
Find what your TV is capable of and use whatever number from that list best fits your tv. and yes, the list is valid.
Cheers =^-^=

| Comment #67 by: BIG L on 07 Sep 2008, 19:37 UTC | reply to this comment | Same here. The keyboard I'm using works fine with my PC, and even worked when I had YDL previously installed on my PS3. For some reason, though, when I reach the kboot screen, typing doesn't work. Makes writing the whole "Install" thing kind of difficult. Upon unplugging the keyboard and connecting it again, the lights on the keyboard itself flash up, but still no button input. What a jip. |

shawn... you are NOT using the Ubuntu PS3 CD.... you are using the regular Desktop PC CD.
Download the Ubuntu 7.10 PS3 ISO image from here:
http://cdimage.ubuntulinux.org/ports/releases/7.10/release/ubuntu-7.10-desktop-powerpc ps3.iso
and burn it on a blank CD or on a CD-RW disc."
If you just look around you will eventually find your answer. |
| Comment #74.2 by: Ray Porces on 16 Dec 2008, 00:24 GMT | I too had the same problem and was indeed using the correct ps3 version. The answer to your problem is to go to the web and download a program that will burn .iso files to a cd. It was not sufficient on my computer to simply copy the file to a cd. Once I did this, ubuntu installed without a problem. |

Actually Sony didn't say it was 'illegal' to anything but Linux... Windows doesn't support the cell architecture (yet, i don't know if they plan to ing the future for distributed computing). Mac OS X is now only made for Intel processors. It would be possible to run the old PowerPC based Mac OS X but it wouldn't run nearly as well as Linux |

in order to boot in ps3, anyware if youare, you can just puss the buttom which close the ps3 until you hear the second bipppp and the light turn to red. Then don't take your finger from there and close the main power switch of ps3 and open it again (you must still have your finger in the close buttom and after the second sound take it from the buttom).

| Comment #86 by: SaggyBalls on 08 Jan 2009, 06:59 UTC | reply to this comment | Another thing, for those of you who do not get the kboot command prompt, insert the ubuntu cd and then restart it in the normal playstation os (xmb), go to settings-->system settings-->default system--> change it to other os and after it restarts in the other os you should get the kboot prompt after a few seconds. For some reason, for me anyway, it would only give me the kboot prompt when I had the cd inside the ps3 after a reboot. Good Luck |

1. Use "boot-game-os" to get back to XMB

3. Go to system settings>default system>other os
4. Hopefully a different screen will show up and you can just hit enter

| Comment #97 by: Matt on 12 Apr 2009, 20:15 UTC | reply to this comment | Hey I'm installing right now but I cant see the full screen. I used the link for the PS3 from Softpedia. I clicked on the minimize button on a "getting started" box and it vanished off screen. What do I do? |
| Comment #98 by: nic on 30 Apr 2009, 02:13 UTC | reply to this comment | If you want to install with full 1080p resolution then at kboot type : install video=ps3fb:mode:133
or 131 for 720p...just my 2 cents |

| Comment #100 by: Pascal on 10 May 2009, 12:52 UTC | reply to this comment | Hello,
I followed the instructions here.
After the installer reached 82% it showed an error-message:
mirror server not available
I have copied the otheros.bld file with my Macintosh on the usb-flashdrive (fat32)
Is that the fault?
I don't know what to do? |
| Comment #100.1 by: Marius Nestor on 11 May 2009, 07:33 GMT | Hi, remove the Ethernet cable from the PS3 or stop any wireless router you may have... and try again. |
| Comment #101 by: s0nicfreek on 19 May 2009, 16:26 UTC | reply to this comment | You cannot run high end graphic games on your other OS the Ps3 has 250 MB of ram and only allots 168 to the other os. I can only get BAttlefield 1942 to run on it which is fine by me, but sorry bro no can do |
| Comment #102 by: Kroxier on 13 Jun 2009, 22:19 UTC | reply to this comment | Can someone actually answer the first question?
I also recieve the same Error saying the rootfs is corrupt or missing, as soon as I boot with the Other OS. I've tried all the commands I know that could recover it, but it seems the problem is that when KBoot is loading, it isn't actually reading the CD drive (which I think the root file system is on). Seems like it's trying to boot an operating system that it hasn't yet installed, so if someone could provide a solution to this problem, I would appreciate it. |
| Comment #102.1 by: Erlend on 14 Jul 2009, 15:14 GMT | Hi Kroxier, did you finally got your solution? If so, got a tip? Thx |

| Comment #107 by: rob on 03 Sep 2009, 00:15 UTC | reply to this comment | So I Installed ubuntu on my ps3 hooked up to my hd tv. ubuntu can not get on the internet 1st of all. No way to change the screen resolution from 576x384 2ndly. This kinda crap is what always turns users off of Linux. I shoulda just bought an xbox. Sure it's bloated MS crap right, but it works right outa the box. Linux distros should always come with the disclaimer (only works if your a programer). |
| Comment #108 by: macman on 09 Nov 2009, 05:26 UTC | reply to this comment | i tried to install the ubuntu but when i get to the part where it says press enter if in dobt it says ps3-ehci-driver sb_05: USB bus 1 deregistered and it doesnt do anything else can someone please help me |
| Comment #108.1 by: fredy on 02 Sep 2010, 12:44 GMT | May be you need to format the harddisk in PS3 and allocate 10G for other OS.
Then select other OS and reboot it. then use the install disc to install. |
| Comment #109 by: Ruben on 10 Nov 2009, 01:28 UTC | reply to this comment | Im having trouble installing ubuntu 7.10 on my ps3.First off I'm going to give links to the pages i used on how to install.
http://news.softpedia.com/news/Ubunt...S3-73272.shtml
http://news.softpedia.com/news/Insta...10-68645.shtml
Ok so I have done all the steps and had no problems till I get the menu where it asks about partitioning hard drive ( shown in the second link provided)
In the guide it explains to use the partition that was set up before to run the os. ( as I would like to use it as a secondary os allowing me to keep the ps3 xmb os) but I'm only given the option to use the entire disk space and the 10gb that I partition for the os. Not just the 10gb partition. I'm also given the option to do it manually but as you can see ( from where this is posted lol) I'm new to linux. I would really appreciate any help or maybe a link to where I can solve this problem. Thanks in advance. I have posted this in a few places to get help with no luck someone please help |
| Comment #110 by: charles on 14 Nov 2009, 10:02 UTC | reply to this comment | is your Playstation connected by a HDMI cable? because if its SCART or Component cable'd the max res is what you got. an HDMI cable is not so expensive (10-15 dollars)
tho i think you might have to reinstall in that resolution.
i have never used ubuntu before but im planning to install it.
i could be wrong, but i doubt so.
Try it. if it doesnt work, you can always return the cable. |

| Comment #113 by: Paul on 01 Jan 2010, 00:16 UTC | reply to this comment | The blueray/dvd drive of the ps3 stopped working, So me and my bro have 2 of them now and decided to try and install Ubunto, now as we dont have the dvd drive we put the fules on the flash drive... WE got the kernal or the kboot screen to come up.. it gave us the error message that says the root fs is missing and or missing config file... then we used a new version and got past that point. and the ps3 loaded up a screen looks like a GUI.. and it gave us resolution options. 0-safe mode... etc.... but it goes back to the black command line screen and then goes back to the screen to select resolutions...we are tryin to figure this out but we aren't familiar with Linux based systems.... any help getting it up and running would be appreciated./.. can it be installed without a dvd drive....from flash....and need some instructions.....our pcs in our bedrooms broke and we thought we have 2 old ps3's without working dvd drives....thought could use them as linux based computers... maybe install new dvd drives later..if possible. mostly gonna use them for messenger and internet broswing.. any help would be appreciated./ |

| Comment #117 by: erohir on 15 Mar 2010, 14:22 UTC | reply to this comment | Hi,
ubuntu 7.1:
I was following the guide but:
No default root fs was found, or one was found and didn't contain a message= config file.

| Comment #119 by: Crash on 26 Mar 2010, 21:57 UTC | reply to this comment | Hi, the article is great, but how do you go back into the PS3's operating system (XMB) again? |
| Comment #119.1 by: Marius Nestor on 31 Mar 2010, 10:08 GMT | There is a section in the tutorial, called "Go back to the PS3 OS"...
To get back to your PS3 OS, restart Ubuntu and, at the KBoot prompt, type:
boot-game-os |
| Comment #120 by: Jason M on 06 Jul 2010, 22:36 UTC | reply to this comment | Is there ANY possible way to load Ubuntu on a PS3 Slim edition console? I just went through all the steps and had been wondering why "Custom" had not been an option under my Format Utility. Turns out Sony dropped the contract with Linux? Is that what I understand?
Am I up the creek here or are there ANY other OS's available that are compatible with a PS3 Slim edition console? |
| Comment #120.1 by: Marius Nestor on 07 Jul 2010, 14:07 GMT | Yes, it is true, and there is no other way at the moment to install Linux on any PS3 device with firmware 3.30 or later! |
