No, this is not a joke! It is the second maintenance release of Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (Dapper Drake), which (if everyone forget it) it is still supported with maintenance updates and security fixes until June 2009, on desktops, and June 2011 on servers. This release brings to its users a lot of security updates and corrections, all with a single goal: to keep Ubuntu 6.06 LTS a stable and reliable Linux distribution!

"This maintenance release is a clear demonstration of our long-term commitment to users and businesses who want to use Ubuntu as a core platform. [...] Coming as it does
shortly before the next long-term release, Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, it is a clear signal to ISVs, manufacturers, businesses and users that Ubuntu is the Linux platform on which to build a strategy"
, stated Jane Silber, Chief Operating Officer of Canonical UK, in the release announcement.

Let's have a quick look over the main features introduced in this second release of Dapper Drake:

Hardware-independent installer fixes:

■ Users can configure LVM using RAID partitions as physical volumes.

Installation on HP ProLiant DL3xx server platforms:

■ Detection of the DAC960 RAID controller;
■ Detection of HP Virtual Keyboard;
■ Detection of Broadcom NetXtreme II BCM5708;
■ Installation of Lilo with the HP/Compaq SmartArray RAID controller.

Installation on Dell PowerEdge server platforms:

■ Detection of I2O-based hardware RAID controllers, such as the Adaptec 2xxx series;
■ Detection and handling of PERC/MegaRaid controllers.

Other improvements include:

■ Handling of proxy disabling;
■ NFS mounts on 64 bit platforms;
■ Printing of documents with certain international characters in the title. This release includes updated server installation CDs for the i386 and amd64 architectures.
