The same six-month cycle will apply to Ubuntu 15.04

Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) is the next operating system from Canonical and it follows the same six-month development cycle. This means that the upcoming release is set to release in April, more precisely on April 23.

The Ubuntu developers are right now occupied mostly with the development of the Ubuntu Touch operating system and most of their efforts are going in that direction. Still, there are some devs who also work on the desktop version and they are preparing the 15.04 release, which has to arrive, no matter what.

The version number is a good indication about the launch date. Ubuntu 15.04 means 2015 and the month of April, so whatever plans Canonical has it needs to follow this simple rule.

The Ubuntu makers have yet to be late with a release and they've always respected the proposed launch day, although it's worth remembering that this is actually a proposed schedule and not a final one. It usually stays the way it was initially set up, but there is always a chance that it will be modified.

Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) might be more interesting than expected

Canonical has its hands full right now with all the products that its making, but the company is also in the middle on an important transition.

The desktop Ubuntu flavor is going through some important changes, including the development of a new display server called Mir, the adoption of a new version of Unity, and the implementation of systemd from Debian upstream.

All this work is spread out on several editions and Ubuntu 15.04 won't be the version that will feature all of these changes. On the other hand, it will probably get at least systemd, which is no small feat.

Regular users don't have anything to look out for, but it's still early in the development cycle and it will take a while to see if there are notable modifications.

When Ubuntu 15.04 is arriving

As usually, Ubuntu won't partake to the intermediary release schedule, but some of the flavors will probably want to, so that's the reason for the dates mentioned until then.

The first Alpha version is expected to arrive on December 18, the second one on January 22, followed by the feature freeze on February 19.

The final Ubuntu 15.04 Beta (the only version to also include the base flavor) will land on March 26. The launch date for Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) is scheduled on April 23.
