The kernel for Ubuntu 15.04 has been upgraded

A new Linux kernel has been made available for Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) and the developers are also tracking the current 3.19 branch of the kernel, which will eventually be adopted after it reaches a stable state.

Given that the development cycle of both the Linux kernel 3.19 branch and Ubuntu 15.04 are coming to a close, it's very likely that this particular version of the kernel will be implemented in the latest operating system from Canonical. This is important to know because the kernel is one of the most important components in a distribution.

It's also true that most of the users won't really notice any kind of difference from Linux kernel 3.16 and Linux kernel 3.19, with the exception of those possessing some of the latest hardware released, like the latest Intel chips for example. The 3.19 branch of the kernel comes with some interesting improvements for that class of processors.

Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) is getting close to launch

The developers still have a couple of months for some of the finishing touches. As the version number implies, Ubuntu 15.04 is scheduled to be launched in April, which is actually quite close. Also, the final version of Linux kernel 3.19 is supposed to land in just a couple of weeks.

"Our Vivid kernel has been rebased to v3.18.3 upstream stable. It's been uploaded to the archive, 3.18.0-11.2. We'll rebase to v3.18.4 shortly. We've also rebased our unstable branch to v3.19-rc6 and uploaded to our ckt PPA," said Canonical's Joseph Salisbury.

Until Ubuntu 15.04 is released, developers also need to take care of a couple of other versions. Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS is expected to arrive on February 5, and the Beta 1 freeze for the current branch is scheduled for February 26.

You can download Ubuntu 15.04 right now from Softpedia and give it a spin. It's a daily build and it contains all the improvements made to the distribution so far.
