The kernel freeze for Ubuntu is just one day away

Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) is about to be released in a little over two weeks, and the developers have announced that they settled on Linux kernel 3.19.3, a couple of days before the kernel freeze.

We've been writing about the various Linux kernels that were adopted by Ubuntu during the 15.04 development cycle and the team went through a lot of them, but now they finally settled on Linux kernel 3.19.3, which is not actually surprising. It's the latest stable Linux kernel available at this time, so it makes sense that it will be the one adopted.

There was a glitter of hope that Linux kernel 4.0 might be out in time, a week before the kernel freeze in the Ubuntu OS, but that didn't happen, and Linus Torvalds decided to postpone the launch for another week. Linux kernel 4.0 will be released past the kernel freeze in Ubuntu, so nothing is going to happen in that regard.

Ubuntu 15.04 to ship with a slightly modified Linux kernel 3.19.3

Some of you might notice after the launch of Ubuntu 15.04 that the Linux kernel used is something like 3.19.0.X, but that's only because the Ubuntu devs don't use the stock kernel in their distro. They modify it somewhat, and they change the version number. But make no mistake about it, Vivid Vervet is based on the 3.19.3 version.

"Our Vivid kernel remains based on the upstream v3.19.3 stable kernel. Vivid kernel freeze is this Thurs Apr 9. We are still chasing down some recent regressions, but we intend to prepare and upload our proposed final kernel for Vivid no later than tomorrow Wed Apr 8. If you have any patches that need to land for 15.04's release, please let us know and get them submitted to the list now," said Canonical's Joseph Salisbury.

The launch date for Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) is April 23. We also have a comprehensive list of new features and changes that are being implemented for this release.
