It was only a matter of time until Systemd became default

Canonical plans to switch Ubuntu 15.04 from Upstart to Systemd in just a few days and they wanted people to know in advance.

It's common knowledge that Ubuntu is based on Debian, so when Debian decided to move to Systemd (the init system), it was pretty clear what Ubuntu had to do as well. It didn't matter that they already had their own solution in place, meaning Upstart. They just decided to do it and now it's time to follow through.

"It should be no secret any more, but it'll get serious now: we will switch Ubuntu Vivid to boot with systemd instead of upstart. That is, desktop, server, cloud/autopkgtests (that already happened two days ago), and all flavors. snappy has used systemd from day one. We will *not* switch Ubuntu Touch, however," wrote developer Martin Pitt.

The announced date for the switch is March 9, so it's just a few days away. The developer also explained that this will happen for new installs and for upgrades. It's also possible that after some testing has been done, Ubuntu might move back to Upstart until all the problems and bugs that have been identified will be fixed.
