Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) is expected to arrive in October 2014 and the developers managed to integrate the latest Linux kernel 3.16 stable release quite fast.

Ubuntu developers have been tracking Linux kernel 3.16 for quite some time and they've said that it will probably be the branch that will go into the final release. Now, Linus Torvalds made the 3.16 kernel available just a few days ago and it's been implemented already.

“The Utopic kernel has been rebased to v3.16 final and uploaded to the archive, ie. linux-3.13.0-7.12. Please test and let us know your results,” says Canonical's Joseph Salisbury.

This is just the first version of Linux kernel 3.16, but it's very likely that more point updates will be made in the near future and they will be integrated as well.

Also, it's worth noting that the Utopic Feature Freeze is only one week away and that the final Beta release for Ubuntu 14.10 is just six weeks away.

If you want to test Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) right now, you can download the daily build from Softpedia. It has all the latest improvements, it's still unstable and developers are constantly working on it, but it's getting better all the time.
