Ubuntu 14.04 LTS is receiving some minor facelifts in a few areas that might not be all that obvious for regular users, but it shows the commitment of the Ubuntu developers to release a great new OS.

If you remember correctly, Ubuntu developers proposed and implemented a few new window decoration improvements that are no longer relying on Compiz. The previous modifications had to do with the anti-aliased corners. It seems that this problem was important enough, so the Ubuntu developer felt the need to fix it.

Improving the window decorations for Unity 7 to incorporate the anti-aliased corner had some drawbacks. For example, it's no longer possible to move the window buttons from left to right. The old metacity engine allowed this particular functionality, but things have changed.

Now, the new window decorations also allow for a much more interesting feature that is also almost invisible to the naked eye. The application window borders will be removed, a move which should make the windows look more at home.

It's true that the current 1-pixel-wide border used until now is hardly noticeable, but a keen eye might observe it in a situation of high contrast, like two white applications stacked on the desktop. On the white background, the border could have been easily spotted.

In any case, the update that incorporates this particular feature should land soon in the main Ubuntu 14.04 LTS repositories.
