A final decision hasn't been taken yet, but it's very likely to happen

The current Ubuntu Developer Summit has been rather productive and it seems that Firefox is the first casualty.

The Ubuntu developers have talked about replacing the default Mozilla Firefox browser with Chromium. This might not seem like much, but this is a major decision, especially for a big company like Canonical.

The Desktop Manager for Ubuntu, Jason Warner, has said (as spotted by omgubuntu.co.uk) that a lot of users are asking for Chromium and that, in many ways, it has surpassed Firefox.

Another good reason, and much more likely to be the most important one, is that Ubuntu Touch, the version that is set to arrive on tablets and phones, make use of WebKit. A Chromium solution would be in Canonical's best interest.

This decision will most likely face a valiant oppositions from the Firefox fans, but keep in mind that Firefox will still be available from the official repositories.
