Softpedia is the first to announce today, June 28th, that the second Alpha version of the upcoming Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal) operating system is now available for download. As usual, we've grabbed a copy of it in order to keep you up-to-date with the latest changes in the Ubuntu 12.10 development.

What's new in Ubuntu 12.10 Alpha 2? Well, Ubuntu 12.10 Alpha 2 is now powered by the Linux kernel 3.5.0-2.2 packages, based on the Linux 3.5 RC4 kernel upstream release, and the latest development version of the upcoming GNOME 3.6 desktop environment.

The following important filesystem utilities have been updated in Ubuntu 12.10 Alpha 2: e2fsprogs 1.42.4, mdadm 3.2.5, autofs 2012-06-01, and btrfs-tools 2012-03-28. Also, there's now a new version of the ATI video driver.

Moreover, the Mozilla Firefox 14.0 Beta web browser and Mozilla Thunderbird 14.0 Beta email client were added in this development release of Ubuntu 12.10. For more details take a look at the Ubuntu 12.10 Alpha 2 screenshot tour!

What's new in Kubuntu 12.10 Alpha 2? Well, the second Alpha version of Kubuntu 12.10 is built on top of KDE Software Compilation 4.9 Beta 2. Kopete has been replaced with kde-telepathy and KDM replaced with LightDM as default login manager.

Moreover, LibreOffice has been replaced with Calligra office suite, and the language-selector utility has been removed, allowing users to install language packs from KDE Control Manager.

Last but not least, kde-config-tablet was added to test Wacom/pen tablet configuration, and Kamoso webcam tool and skanlite image scanning app were added. Also, take a look at the Kubuntu 12.10 Alpha 2 screenshot tour!

What's new in Xubuntu 12.10 Alpha 2? Well, the second Alpha version of Xubuntu 12.10 is built on top of the Xfce 4.10 desktop environment. It includes GIMP 2.8 and gThumb 3.0.1.

On October 18th, 2012, Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal) will become the seventeenth release of the Ubuntu operating system. See you again in one month, on July 26th, for the third and last Alpha release of the upcoming Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal).
