As Canonical unleashed the first Alpha version of the upcoming Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal) operating system earlier today, we've taken it for a test drive and reported the new features.

Ubuntu 12.10 Alpha 1 is powered by Linux kernel 3.4 and features the newly released Mozilla Firefox 13.0 as the default web browser and Mozilla Thunderbird 13.0 as the default email client.

For the full release notes, with all the highlights, please check out our in-depth announcement for the new Ubuntu 12.10 Alpha 1 development release. Enjoy the screenshot tour of Ubuntu 12.10 Alpha 1, and also the Kubuntu 12.10 Alpha screenshot tour.

Download Ubuntu 12.10 Alpha 1 right now from Softpedia. Remember that this is an alpha release and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended to be used for testing purposes only.

Screen shots look exactly like 12.04, or I missed a detail

Still looks like 12.04LTS to me. I guess the changes are very subtle and not noticeable. Except the use of FF13 and TB13 and the new kernel.

I have a idea, lets add one new wall paper and call it UBUNTU 13.0 then publicize the heck out of it. Its quite apparent UBUNTU has become the MICROSOFT of the Linux world.

It looks like Unity is keeping its all-time silliest feature: the 'global menu' disappears when you take your mouse off it. Blink, blink. blink. blink... try working in a real program, such as a CAD package, with that going on every time you want to access the menu. The worst part is: there is utterly no reason for that behavior. There is plenty of real estate for the menu to remain visible.

The software was not meant to be run on a Netbook. The favorites bar gets in the way, because it cannot be resized to be narrower. Thus, we have to swing left and right with the scrollbar to adequatey read from the netbook image. A big culprit is Firefox 13 with too many lines taken for toolbar, menu, etc.
