Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Will Have Next-Gen Menus

Mark Shuttleworth announced a few minutes ago, January 24th, on his blog that the next version of the Ubuntu operating system, Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin), will feature a HUD (head-up display) system, replacing the old menus.

"Say hello to the Head-Up Display, or HUD, which will ultimately replace menus in Unity applications." - said Mark Shuttleworth in the blog announcement.

Developed in-house during the last 18 months, the next-generation menu system will definitely revolutionize both the Linux and Windows desktops.

The old menus (yes, the ones that are now designed like in Mac OS) will be replaced by the new HUD system developed by Canonical.

Take a look at the video above to see how the HUD feature works and how it will help us do our daily tasks better.

We now understand why the Unity interface was developed!

I think this will be a big fail..

I have no doubt that Ubuntu's HUD will NOT fail at all, in fact it may well be a big success story. Why!!? Because it levels UP the playing field in terms of features & functionality with Microsoft's windows 7.

OK!! HUD (heads up display) may be a new Canonical Ubuntu Linux concept and Im sure it will be good & highly useful but please tell me how this is radically different from the windows 7 search box feature that is integral to the windows 7 start menu. Frankly I cannot see HUD as anything vastly new or original, call me cynical but its the same windows kind of feature translated for Linux that's all. YES! this may well attract over many new user from the Microsoft arena and good on Canonical for doing this but its really NOT a new idea lets be honest here!!.

This actually has nothing to do with a searchable menu for accessing applications (this kind of functionality has been implemented long ago). What the HUD deals with is actually application-specific menus -- the nested menus on the top of a window that usually contains items like File, Edit, Help. This is definitely something new as far as I can tell, although I'm not sure I'm a fan of it or not, yet.

I kinda like the ideea of HUD, but i'd like to see those autocomplete suggestions in a different manner, maybe more suggestive. Maybe making them look like thumbnails or previews of actions of programs.
I know from my personal experience with computers that humans recognize much faster pictograms, special signs or symbols than any random or given string of plain text.
Plain text is not much of use, especially written in foreign languages to the user. The future of communication is similar to the languages of ancient Egypt or ancient China: many symbols in infinite combinations to express anything. Go see yourself: blue f for facebook, yellow y for Yahoo, sky-blue t for twitter, black W for Wikipedia. And i could go on all night long about this.

Most impractical idea ! It works only if you already know the menu structure. If you're using an app you've never used before...??? If you're new user ??? There is a reason if command line programs are command line programs and gui programs are gui programs.
Good bye Ubuntu !

Actually, I can see people who don't know the menus searching for commands this way. I can also see myself getting very tired of it very quickly..

I thought we left the command line UI back in the past? Why do i have to recall the names of commands and bits of text to get something done instead of simply pushing the button i need. If i dont know the name of the feature im using, this tool is completely useless.

The ribbon is over 5 years old now and its still more useful and revolutionary than this piece of crap. At least the ribbon lists ALL the tools available and lets me explore them, this is pointless. If i want to "undo" something, i dint want to have to type undo 20 times, give me a blasted button and make it easy to find.
