Fabio Colinelli proudly announced us a few hours ago that the MyUnity project reached version 2 and it brings full support for Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Nawrhwal) and revamped interface and new features.

MyUnity is an independent configurator for Unity, a small system utility for Ubuntu, that can handle the customization of the Unity Launcher, Dash and Panel.

In an email to Softpedia Linux stuff, the Italian developer, Fabio Colinelli, announced the release of MyUnity 2.0.0, a version which brings numerous fixes and improvements, a brand-new Graphical User Interface (GUI) which makes it easier to use, and complete support for the Ubuntu 11.04 operating system.

However, the good news is that Canonical accepted the MyUnity project in their default software repositories and it will be available to all users starting with the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) operating system!

Is it already on 12.04 Alpha - USC?

Comment #1.1 by: Marius Nestor on 12 Dec 2011, 13:05 GMT

Yes, it's already available in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Alpha 1 (Precise Pangolin). Just enable the 'universe' repository and install it, from Ubuntu Software Center :)

Why is this good news? Unity is known far and wide as the desktop for those who can't.

Well done to the developers, but adding the ability to fiddle about with an unwanted and pointless mobile phone interface on a PC ???

What theme are you using on those screenshots?

Comment #4.1 by: Marius Nestor on 13 Dec 2011, 15:30 GMT

The theme I'm using is a mix of two popular GTK3 themes :)

Come back next week and you'll learn how to enable it on your desktop ;) (can't say more)

Joy a control panel interface for a desktop nobody likes!!!

Unity is nothing but a shell, Gnome is the desktop.

Promising, but still not customizable enough to convince me to come back to Ubuntu proper.

Comment #6.1 by: ActionParsnip on 06 Jan 2012, 02:19 GMT

Try a different DE then. Gnome is not the only desktop. Try XFCE, KDE, LXDE or any of the others available to you....

How about an ability to remove unity painlessly :)

Is there going to be anyway to turn that Unity Bar off??? I use cairo dock and am very satisfied with the dock. I hate it when the bar pops out when the mouse is over in that area....

Comment #12.1 by: Marius Nestor on 16 Mar 2012, 13:53 GMT

Hmm, I don't think so. I've noticed that Canonical removed the check box from the Unity plugin in CompizConfig Settings Manager app, which means no end-user will be able to disable it anymore.

We'll see if some smart developer can bypass that and disable it, offering users alternatives :)
