Leann Ogasawara's bold proposal for Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS point release looks like a go

Leann Ogasawara, Canonical’s very beautiful kernel team manager, posted an interesting message on Ubuntu’s development mailinglist, proposing the release of another point release of the still supported Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) operating system.

As you all know, Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS was just announced this Thursday, February 6, 2014, and it was the last point release for Canonical’s current LTS (Long Term Release) operating system. However, because the Precise Pangolin release will still be supported by Canonical with security patches and software updates until 2017, the team thinks that there’s room for an Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS release.

“12.04.4 shipped with a Saucy enablement stack by default. This Saucy enablement stack in Precise will eventually EOL in favor of the Trusty enablement stack. Once that happens, our final point release for Precise will be delivering an EOL'd enablement stack.

“This seems unfortunate and inappropriate. I would like to propose having a 5th point release for Precise which would deliver the Trusty enablement stack for Precise,” Leann Ogasawara said in the email.

Until now, there have been only positive responses to her proposal, especially since the Kubuntu and Edubuntu maintainers agreed and decided to jump on 12.04.5 LTS bandwagon. We’ll report back with an exact date for the Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS (Precise Pangolin) release.
