Yes, it is now official, Canonical decided to replace Evolution Email and Calendar with Mozilla Thunderbird as the default email client and calendaring software for the Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) operating system.

Mike Conley proudly announced last evening (August 10th) on his blog that Canonical decided to use the popular Mozilla Thunderbird as the default e-mail client for the upcoming Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) operating system.

This is not really out of the blue, as Mozilla Thunderbird has been already set as the default email client on two Alpha development releases of Ubuntu 11.10.

The Alpha 3 release of Ubuntu 11.10 includes the latest development version of Mozilla Thunderbird 6, as we have reported in our in-depth article.

We've also made another in-depth article about the inclusion of the Mozilla Thunderbird email client on the Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) release a month ago, when it was about to be included in the Alpha 2 version.

"Thunderbird has been set as the default e-mail client on the past two Oneiric alphas. Isn’t this old news? Well, kinda, yeah. But the thing is, those first alphas were just to get a sense of how Thunderbird would work as the default client, and to gather feedback."

"At a moments notice, Canonical could have backed it out and switched it back to Evolution. But they’ve given their thumbs up, and they’re fully on board." - said Mike Conley on his blog post.

Mozilla Thunderbird 6.0 under Ubuntu 11.10 Alpha 3
The latest version of Mozilla Thunderbird brings nice features, such as migration assistant, mail account setup wizard, one-click Address Book, activity manager, quick filter toolbar, tabs, message archive, Add-ons manager (just like the one in Firefox 5), smart folders, robust privacy, and phishing protection.

The Lightning add-on will also be integrated in Mozilla Thunderbird and the indicator-datetime panel applet, but we have no idea if it will be ready for the final release of Ubuntu 11.10 in October.
