The release schedule for the upcoming Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) operating system has been modified last week by Canonical. The second Alpha version was supposed to arrive for testing last Thursday, June 30th, but it was rescheduled for July 7th.

For Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot), Canonical decided to change the release schedule again, rescheduling Alpha 2 for July 7th. The rest of the dates remain the same. Here is the new release schedule for Ubuntu 11.10:

June 2nd, 2011 - Alpha 1 release
July 7th, 2011 - Alpha 2 release
August 4th, 2011 - Alpha 3 release
September 1st, 2011 - Beta 1 release
September 22nd, 2011 - Beta 2 release
October 13th, 2011 - Final release of Ubuntu 11.10

As you can see, the one week delay of the second Alpha release will not affect the rest of the development cycle for Ubuntu 11.10. The final release will be available, as supposed, on October 13th, 2011.

See you again this Thursday, June 7th, for an in-depth article of the Ubuntu 11.10 Alpha 2 development release. But, until then, here's what to expect from this version:

· Linux kernel 3.0;
· The desktop is accessible again;
· Mozilla Thunderbird 5.0 as default mail client;
· Mozilla Firefox 5.0 as default web browser;
· Deja Dup backup tool;
· Synaptic Package Manager.

I see "Synaptic Package Manager" on the expected features. I thought they were removing Synaptic? Is this a typo, or did they change their minds?

No typo! Yes, Synaptic is still there :) I've made a screenshot for you...

Still can't say that Unity is the direction I would go with the desktop. I have not tried it, but it does not look like it has near the flexibility and power of Gnome on the workstation desktop. Unity looks like an over-grown smart-phone interface.

I really like Gnome with X. I like the multiple desktops, direct console access, network layer access, and general familiar and productive feel of the Gnome desktop.

1. Please could you put an option to leave and delete comments on the PDF reader. Foxit Reader has this option and it is very useful. However Foxit Reader does not work properly on 11.04 even with Wine. I understand that the company is trying to get a Linux version up and working but there are mega bugs yet to overcome.
2. Please could you also look at firming up the cursor which seems to be rather lazy with poor response times.
