South African Vodafone affiliate, Vodacom, announced the immediate availability of a Webbook device powered by the newly released Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) operating system.

The 10-inch netbook runs the newest version of Ubuntu, on a Cortex A8-based Freescale i.MX51 CPU @ 800-900MHz, with 512MB of system RAM, 4GB of flash storage, and a Vodacom SIM card slot.

The Ubuntu 11.10 powered Webbook is available now! Price starts at R1,499 (about $190 or 137 EUR) for the netbook only, and climbs up to R1,899 (about $245 or 177 EUR) for the netbook, a modem , a SIM card and 100MB of monthly data for one year.

The Webbook can also be sold with a two year contract, which includes 500MB of data for R189 (about $24 or 17 EUR) a month.

The Vodacom Webbook can be bought from Vodacom World and participating outlets in South Africa starting with October 19th, 2011.
