Do you remember Ubuntu 10.04? Well, we do, and we can tell you that, while the Desktop version is no longer supported since May 9, 2013, the Server edition will be supported until April 30, 2015. Back then, when Ubuntu 10.04 was announced, all LTS (Long Term Support) releases were supported 3 years on the Desktop and 5 years on the Server.

Today’s news comes from a mailing list announcement posted by Adam Conrad, who informs us that the Server edition of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, codenamed Lucid Lynx, will reach End of Life (EOL) next month, on April 30, 2015. This means that Canonical will no longer feed the operating system with kernel patches or security updates.

“Ubuntu announced its 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) release almost 5 years ago, on April 29, 2010. As with the earlier LTS releases, Ubuntu committed to ongoing security and critical fixes for a period of 5 years,” says Adam Conrad on behalf of the Ubuntu Release Team. “The support period is now nearing its end and Ubuntu 10.04 will reach end of life on Thursday, April 30th. At that time, Ubuntu Security Notices will no longer include information or updated packages for Ubuntu 10.04.”

Users are urged to upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS via Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Of course, this also means that, if you’re still running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on your servers, you will have to upgrade to a newer version of the operating system, such as Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS (Trusty Tahr). To do that, you must first upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS (Precise Pangolin), which is supported until April 2017, and then upgrade to the newer Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS.

Detailed instructions on how to do the aforementioned upgrade are provided by Canonical at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PreciseUpgrades, for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, and at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/TrustyUpgrades, for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. The latest stable version of Ubuntu is 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn), which will be replaced by the upcoming Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) release on April 23, 2015. Please note that it is not recommended to update Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to a non-LTS release!
