A few minutes ago, the Ubuntu development team unleashed the first Beta version of the upcoming Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) operating system, due for release in late April this year. As usual, we've downloaded a copy of it in order to keep you up-to-date with the latest changes in the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS development.

What's new in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Beta 1? Well, as everybody already knows... Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Beta 1 has a brand-new look, composed of two new themes (Ambiance and Radiance), one is dark and the other one is light. Click the link above to access a very nice article we created last week, to showcase the new themes, logos, font, boot splash and boot prompt. However, after installing the proprietary Nvidia video drivers, the boot splash screen has been changed to what you see below...

The Humanity icon theme has also been updated, in accordance with the new GTK2 themes, especially the Desktop icon...

Another thing that everyone already knew from various websites around the web is that Ubuntu 10.04 LTS incorporates the Yahoo! search engine on the default Home Page for the Mozilla Firefox web browser. However, this can be easily switched back to the Google search engine by simply selecting it from the Search Bar!

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Beta 1 is powered by the GNOME 2.30 RC (2.29.92) desktop environment and the kernel packages have been updated to version 2.6.32-16.25, based on Linux kernel 2.6.32.9.

What's new in Kubuntu 10.04 LTS Beta 1? The first beta version of the upcoming Kubuntu 10.04 LTS operating system is built on top of the KDE Software Compilation 4.4.1, and includes the newly released Amarok 2.3.0 music player, a polished system tray notification, better integration for Mozilla Firefox, Touchpad configuration support in System Settings, integration of GNOME apps in systray, and a good-looking installer!

The bootsplash has not been changed, it only depends on the graphic driver you use, and the absence of logo is a bug already reported : https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/526892

Don't worry, it is not less nice than it was before !

Is it really necessary to have those watermarks on the screenshots?

Comment #3 by: Lao Fzu on 19 Mar 2010, 16:07 UTC reply to this comment

The minimize, maximize and close window buttons are also on the left side now. What gives?

Comment #3.1 by: AJ on 19 Mar 2010, 19:38 GMT

The window buttons can be adjusted back to the right again.

This was done as the main window controls are on the left so in theory it increases overall productivity

Mike,

They have dont the hardwork and its fair enough to make it difficult to copy across and use them.

Lao,

Check this link. Ubuntu Tweak has a solution for that.

If you prefer the hardway then this linke

So, Ubuntu is releasing a Linux Terminal Server version? Awesome. Don't they teach you to expand your acronyms the first time you use them in an article in Journalism 101? I was taught to do it in 8th grade.

Comment #7 by: OS DESIGNER on 20 Mar 2010, 15:20 UTC reply to this comment

Nice, it is going better than ever, i like the left side cotrols... more because this os shuld look like osx, its UNIX !!!, and i think that they gonna place from right side menu (File, Edit,...) but we will see. I don't like new violet icons.., that violet colour is not like the violet used in background, is so violent - gaudy... they should use more harmonic colous... for that icons... And i dont like the buttons colours... they should be light... or with some glass style like in osx...

AND SOFTPEDIA I ALSO HATE WHEN YOU ADD WATERMARKS... WE CANT SEE DETAILS ... IF YOU LIKE YOU CAN ADD ON EVERY IMAGE A FRAME WITH SOFTPEDIA... NOT WATERMARKS THAT BLURE IMPORTANT THINGS...

:-DDD i was looking some comments about MOL (Mac applications on Linux) and i am feeling so funny that people that make-use OSX think that LINUX is crap....(and they are payed of course with imac's to whrite comments against linux) hahahahahha i have iMac too, but i find a way to remove OSX (this is os that looks good but is stupid like bolnde girls :-DDD) i use every popular app, like Adobe all apps, iLife, iWork,... and i fell that is so painful to work on mac, it is so hard... the GUI is beautiful but is stupid... (applications are good becouse they have excelent tools), (i find this on GIMP too i like to see GIMP tools in one window), NOW I KNOW THAT SOON UBUNTU WILL BE BETTER THAN OSX IN GUI !!! AND I WISH IN APPS... BUT ALL WITH TIME :-D LINUX RULES !!!

Are u guys sure the left buttons are not a bug? When I opened "Apperance" it shows all the themes buttons on the right side.

Comment #15 by: Beerhunter on 01 Apr 2010, 14:39 UTC reply to this comment

I have tested the Beta 1, and my opinion is that the Luicd Lynx is much more stable than Karmic.

Yeah its true there are still some bugs an missing funktions in some packages like smb, but its an Beta version.

If the bugs and missing things got fixed, I will switch to Linux, remove Windows.

I like the Changes witch were made, and colors i dont like i could change thats the good of Linux in general.

Happy looking forward to the 29th of April

Better wait longer than April 29-past releases haven't come out in particularly good shape and in my experience it's been better to wait a while (preferably a month but certainly a week) before installing new Ubuntu releases.
