A few minutes ago, the Ubuntu development team unleashed the second alpha version of the upcoming Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) operating system, due for release in late April this year. As usual, we've downloaded a copy of it in order to keep you up-to-date with the latest changes in the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS development.

What's new in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Alpha 2? Well, the most important feature of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Alpha 2 is probably the inclusion of the Plymouth graphical boot manager utility from Red Hat, which replaces the old Usplash. The new Nvidia proprietary video driver 190.53 (the old 173.14.22 and 96.43.14 versions are still available and can be installed along with the new one), and Likewise Open version 5.4 are also part of this release.

The Linux kernel packages in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Alpha 2 have been upgraded to 2.6.32-10.14, based on Linux kernel 2.6.32, and the GNOME desktop environment to version 2.29.4, which brings new features, especially to Nautilus, which now offers twin-panel functionality, called Extra Pane (see the screenshot below for details).

Moreover, there is now a new application, called PiTiVi, which allows you to edit your movies!

In the games section, Gnometris has been replaced with Quadrapassel, and gbrainy (a brain teaser game) has been added (see the screenshot below for details).

What's new in Kubuntu 10.04 LTS Alpha 2? The second alpha version of the upcoming Kubuntu 10.04 LTS operating system is built on top of the KDE Software Compilation 4.4 RC1, which includes lots of new features and improvements over the previous KDE 4.3 releases. It also offers a new design for the login manager (see the screenshots below for details).

Nice article Marius

I like the changes in alpha version of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Specifically, the indicator Applet Session being split in two. I use the one that allows you to shut down/restart/hibernate/suspend a lot in 9.10. I added it from 'Add to panel'.

i hope development continues on pitivi because it doesn't even have basic features right now. i think openshot would have been a better choice.

Comment #2.1 by: JorgeM93 on 17 Jan 2010, 02:20 GMT

You're right, openshot would be the best video editor to be included at Ubuntu, PiTiVi is SO basic whereas openshot has a lot of features, is esay to use and integrates well with the GNOME desktop. I hope this desition may be reconsidered at laest for Ubuntu 10.10

Pai si unde e screenshotul cu Plymouth? :)

Comment #4.1 by: Marius Nestor on 15 Jan 2010, 14:06 GMT

English:

Plymouth only appears for Intel/ATI (not fglrx) video cards with KMS. For Nvidia there is no support for KMS in this alpha. Neither in VirtualBox :) There are also a lot of issues with both KMS and the Nvidia driver, also with Jockey... the driver must be installed manually from the terminal....etc :)

Comment #4.2 by: Andrew on 15 Jan 2010, 15:39 GMT

i like that twin-panel functionality. No need for any other file commander anymore. So great !!!

Agreed. Pitivi has started development from the scratch while openshot has reached version. Openshot should hv been included in ubuntu

How come all that seems be attended to is stuff that we can get from synaptic package manager, somehow no one has said anything about making gprs connections (using mobile phones) easier in ubuntu all that can be suggested chances are have tried it and it has fallen flat on it's face. availability of vga drivers for netbooks is still a thorn on the side. Just a thought how much in productive muscle is Lucid Lynx better than say hardy-Heron, Karmic Koala and Intrepid Ibex, I hope some day the developers will dwell on whats under the hood until then am trying my hand in LFS

I do not like Open Shot... I agree Canonical with their choice.. we are looking for well looking apps which apply to the standards of icons and every other aspect... PiTiVi can grow in our hands.. we just need people that want to give their assistance in programming..

Not forgetting the vastly reduce boot up time. Mine's gone from almost a minute and a half to about 13 seconds!

WoW, hmmm so so good , they are going very fast, Ubuntu is so sexy, i just love it, they are working on their style... i don't like Kubuntu and Xbuntu, and i think that they should make only Ubuntu, and concentrate on it, if you think microsoft make only one os and apple too, but canonical makes 3 os :-DDD I like Kubuntu instalation, it will be greath if they make Ubuntu instalation with KDE...

You can easily install KDE in Ubuntu... just follow the instructions from this tutorial:
