Video game publisher Ubisoft and Sony Pictures have announced that they are working together to create a video game experience based on The Smurf, set to be linked to the upcoming movie based around the cartoon.

At the moment The Smurf game will be launched on the Nintendo Wii home console and the DS family of handheld devices.

The launch date for The Smurf movies is set for August 3 of this year and the game should be released on around the same date.

It seems that the plot of the video game will be built using the same basic premise as that of the movie, with the characters, in their trademark blue, being chased out of their village by the evil wizard Gargamel and finding a new home in New York's Central Park.

Players will need to guide the characters around as they find a way to get back to their home.

The Smurf video game joins another estimated 3,000 products based on the characters that have been created since the franchise was introduced in the middle of the 80s.

Mark Caplan, who is the vice president in charge of Consumer Products at Sony Pictures Consumer Products, stated, “We look forward to continuing our work with Ubisoft in the video game space. The Smurfs video game will provide kids and families around the world with hours of enjoyment.”

Christian Salomon, the vice president of worldwide licensing at Ubisoft, added, “We’re thrilled to be working with Lafig Belgium and Sony Pictures on the Smurfs license. Our ongoing partnership with Sony Pictures Consumer Products allows us to create fun and entertaining video games based on some of the most popular family films. Ubisoft’s creative team is working hard on crafting the perfect video game experience that will appeal to new and old fans of The Smurfs.”
