The new generation of devices makes it easier for new intellectual properties

Yannis Mallat, the leader of the Montreal studio of Ubisoft, says that the coming reveal and launch of the PlayStation 4 from Sony and the Xbox 720 from Microsoft offers a perfect occasion for the introduction of new intellectual property.

The designer tells CVG that the reasons include the fact that “you can make a game that you couldn't make on the previous systems in terms of capabilities, and also because you benefit from good momentum if you're at launch in terms of coverage, marketing and everything that's fresh from a system perspective.”

The Assassin’s Creed series started life just after the launch of current-generation consoles, but it is still going strong.

Presumably, Ubisoft wants to create a similar long-term life for Watch Dogs, the game that is has confirmed as arriving on the PlayStation 4 and probably on the Xbox 720.
