Ubisoft is announcing its plan to release a fighting game featuring the characters from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to celebrate the anniversary of 25 years since the appearance of the characters. The game will only be developed for the Nintendo Wii and players will be able to use the Wiimote and the Nunchuk to control their fighters. A variety of locations will be featured in the game, players will have four characters to choose from, plus a “very robust online multiplayer mode,” as described in the Nintendo Power magazine.

The development team for the game is made up of some of the people who worked for Team Ninja, and which can list Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden as former releases, and veterans from Game Art, a studio counted amongst the creators of Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Until the new game arrives, sometime in the fall of 2009, players who are also fans of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles can try to get a hold of the two other fighting titles released featuring the same characters: TMNT: Tournament Fighters, launched by Konami for the SNES and NES and TMNT: Mutant Melee, released for the GameCube, the original X and the PC in 2005.

Tony Key, who is the senior vice president of Sales and Marketing at Ubisoft, stated that “There is no better tribute to the Turtles than the creation of a brand-new game that will help to launch the next 25 years of success. It's our pleasure to partner again with Mirage as part of the worldwide birthday celebration for the Turtles.”

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles enjoyed huge popularity during the '90's and Ubisoft is betting that the players of 2009 will remember the four intrepid heroes. We'll see whether nostalgia is a good incentive for purchasing games later in the year.
