Ashraf Ismail, the director working on Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, suggests that the naval multiplayer battles that are not part of his game might be introduced to the series at a future date, maybe with the 2014 release of the franchise.

He tells Eurogamer that, “We had really cool prototypes but to get it to work and to balance the systems - the balance of naval is tricky - to do that in multiplayer... we just couldn't do it in this iteration.”

The limitations seem to be linked to the hardware of the consoles on which Black Flag will be launched and they might be eliminated in one year.

Gamers will be able to engage in full naval combat in the single-player part of the next Assassin’s Creed, which will focus on the Caribbean archipelago, with its mix of nationalities and its abundance of pirates.

Assassin’s Creed IV launches in early November on the PC and home consoles.
