The two companies have found a way to work together

There’s some pretty great news out there for Uber and Spotify fans as the two have decided to team up and offer people control over the playlist while they were getting driven around town via Uber cars.

In a blog post, Spotify confirms a rumor that’s been making the rounds for a few days now, namely that the two companies will be collaborating to let people choose the music they hear during their rides.

“We’ve teamed up with our friends at Uber to let you choose the soundtrack for your ride. When you request a car, you’ll be able to choose the music you want to hear on the journey. When your ride arrives, it’ll be your tunes on the car’s speakers,” the Spotify team writes in the blog post.

The service will be launching to compatible cars and it will be available starting from November 21, in 10 cities around the world. The list includes London, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Mexico City, Nashville, Singapore, Stockholm, Toronto and Sydney. Integration will continue to roll out globally over the next few weeks, but it could take a while before it reaches all corners of the world.

There’s a catch, of course, since only premium members of Spotify will be able to take advantage of the feature. The company has some 40 million users in the entire world, but only about 10 million of them pay for a monthly subscription. Either way, that’s a wide enough pool of people, especially since Uber is popular, but not that widespread.

This technique could, however, end up adding some new paid users for Spotify, especially those that are particularly fond of listening to their own favorite music while getting a ride.

How to make things happen

What you need to do to take advantage of the new feature starting November 21 is connect your Spotify account from the Uber Profile screen or sign up. Then, when you request a ride in the Uber app, if you get matched with a music-enabled Uber driver, the music bar will appear at the bottom of the app.

The next step involves tapping the music bar and selecting music from the ready-made playlists Spotify has come up with, your own saved playlists or you can even search for new content.

You can wirelessly control the music from either the Uber or Spotify apps until you arrive at your destination, regardless if you use the iOS or Android apps.
