Another Uber taxi driver faces criminal charges

Lately, not a day goes by without Uber making headlines, but not always as one would expect from a continuously growing company.

On Tuesday, an Uber driver was jailed for allegedly having burglarized the house of one of his customers. After finishing the fare and dropping the client at the airport, the taxi driver thought it would be the perfect time to go back and break into her house.

What the driver did not think of was that the woman he had just dropped off was not living alone, and her roommate was at home at the time. As soon as he became aware of the fact that there was someone else in the house, Gerald Montgomery, the taxi driver, took off immediately.

How the driver was linked to the crime

However, it seems that the roommate got a glimpse of him before he managed to run off and was able to recognize him from the taxi fare receipt which had the driver’s picture on it.

Uber assures their customers that the drivers they hire do not have a criminal record, but according to The Herald, the alleged burglar tried “to break in through the back door with burglary tools.” Well, he could have been carrying them around in his car, just in case.

It would not be the first time an Uber driver faces criminal charges for his actions, despite the fact that Uber checks the background of their drivers before hiring them. Other cases of similar misconduct during work have been reported to the police, with Uber drivers charged with having sexually assaulted their passengers during the fare.

This kind of news is really not helping the company, making clients wonder if it is secure to take a cab from them, or if they should just go with a less-known but safer taxi company.

After the news of the burglary attempt was released, the company came forward to declare that they ”immediately deactivated the driver’s access to the platform” and that they are willing to assist the police in their investigation in any way they can, The Herald reported.
