Windows XP Embedded Service Pack 2 Feature Pack 2007 has been released to manufacturing on October 31, 2006. Concomitantly, Microsoft had made available an evaluation edition of the product. One of the key features of the product is the USB boot capability. In this context, a custom prepared Windows XPe image can boot from an USB flash drive (UFD), an USB thumb drive or even an USB key. The creation process of the XPe image involves the Target Designer.

There has been a consistent amount of feedback related to this feature. One aspect involved the nature of the USB Flash Drives used in the development and testing process of the Embedded Enabling Feature USB Boot 2.0. The Windows XP Embedded Team proved prompt in responding to user feedback and made available a list of the UFD they used and added that the list will be changing and growing and that they will publish additional information at a later date.
