For those who want the fastest Ethernet access possible, wherever they are

We've seen quite a few unusual inventions, and the latest product from Diamond Multimedia definitely qualifies as such: a USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter called Diamond UE3000.

The Diamond UE3000 USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter is actually a peculiar creation, one whose usefulness we have to wonder about.

On the surface, it would seem obvious enough: USB 3.0 has a top speed of 5 Gbps, which means that it won't break any sweat supporting Gigabit Ethernet (1 Gbps).

But this is where the peculiarity comes in: PCs and consumer electronics that have USB 3.0 usually have Gigabit Ethernet ports of their own as well.

And since the adapter needs a standard USB port, we can't say it could help smartphones or even most tablets.

Still, Diamond Multimedia figured it may as well try to see if it there was a market for something like this, so the Diamond UE3000 USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter is already up for sale at $29.99 / €23.26.

To use it, it just needs to be plugged into a USB port and the other end into an Ethernet cable. An instructional CD is included in the package.

In addition to desktops and notebooks, MacBooks are supported, along with ultrabooks, docking stations, digital home appliances and game consoles.

To enable this, many operating systems are supported: Windows XP, Winows Vista 64, Windows 7 64, Windows 8, MCE, and Mac OS X.

USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 specifications are both supported, but transfer speed will, naturally, be limited in those cases where only the former type of connector is available.
