In an effort to strengthen cybersecurity cooperation between the United States and Canada, the Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and Canada’s Minister of Public Safety Vic Toews have announced the launch of a project called Cybersecurity Action Plan.

The Cybersecurity Action Plan is focused on public awareness activities, information sharing at strategic and operational levels, collaboration, and improved engagement.

“The Cybersecurity Action Plan reinforces the robust relationship between DHS and Public Safety Canada. We look forward to continuing our work together to increase the resiliency of our networks, enhance public-private partnerships, and build a culture of shared responsibility,” Secretary Napolitano explained.

Minister of Public Safety Toews said, “Because the Internet knows no borders, Canada and the US have a mutual interest in partnering to protect our shared infrastructure. We are committed to working with the US to protect vital government and critical digital infrastructure of binational importance, and to make cyberspace safer for all our citizens.”

This isn’t the first step in enhancing the collaborative efforts between the US and Canada. In February 2011, both countries signed a declaration called “Beyond the Border: A Vision for Perimeter Security and Economic Competiveness.”

Last month, Public Safety Canada entered a partnership with the DHS’s “Stop. Think. Connect” campaign.
