Andre Agassi might just make it to the 2nd week of US Open. Although many of us wouldn't have believed it a few days ago, the American living legend managed to qualify to the 3rd round after a couple of incredible performances. After beating Romanian Andrei Pavel in more than 3 and a half hours, Agassi was to face Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis in the 2nd round.
And it didn't look too good for the former World No. 1, especially since Baghdatis was one of the
most spectacular guys in the Tour. The Australian Open finalist was more than 10 years younger then Andre and the match was announcing to be crucial for the latter.
Agassi managed, though, to wrap up the win in almost 4 hours (3 hours and 48 minutes) after a thrilling 5-setter. The American entered the match more determined than ever and, with the incredible crowd behind, took the first 2 sets (6-4 each).
Marcos did not lose confidence, though, and managed to recover from 2-0 down. The Cypriot was again 4-0 down in the 3rd, but produced a stunning performance, winning 7 of the next 8 games in the set.
Once 2-1 down in the 4th, Baghdatis forced his way into the match and got the equalizing set 6-3. Agassi had to focus on this last set, since his opponent was clearly trying to hold on to the momentum. Still, Baghdatis' remarkable comeback left some serious marks on his physical ability to continue the match.
The Cypriot fought a cramp in his thighs late in the 5th, but still managed to even the scores to 5-5. Agassi then took the next two games and sealed the victory. He will now meet German qualifier Benjamin Becker in the 3rd round. Finally, an easier match!
