Last week, the official website of the Southern Baptist Convention – the world's largest Baptist denomination – was blocked on some US military bases. Many rushed to accuse the military of discrimination, but officials say it’s not the case.

Users who attempted to access the site were warned that it contained “hostile content.” Several social media customers rushed to conclude that the “hostile content” might have something to do with the denomination’s views.

However, representatives of the Department of Defense say they haven’t blocked access to the site on purpose, The Tennessean reports.

“The Department of Defense strongly supports the religious rights of service members, to include their ability to access religious websites like that of the SBC,” Defense Department spokesman Lt. Col. Damien Pickart said.

Chris Chapman, the SBC executive committee's director of information systems, told Town Hall that the situation was aggravated by the fact that many didn’t understand the “hostile content” term as it was used in the field of IT.
