In a testimony before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary, US Attorney General Eric Holder said the Department of Justice was investigating the breach suffered by the retailer Target.

Authorities are committed to tracking down not only those directly responsible for breaching the retailer’s systems, but also those who misuse the stolen payment card data.

Two individuals who fall into the latter category have already been arrested. They were detained while trying to cross the border from Mexico into the US. Close to 100 cards made with data stolen from Target were found in their possession.

“The Department of Justice takes seriously reports of any data breach, particularly those involving personally identifiable or financial information, and looks into allegations that are brought to its attention,” Holder said in his testimony.

A total of 40 million payment cards have been compromised in the Target breach. In addition, the personal information of around 70 million individuals might have been obtained by the attackers.
