The Social Security numbers (SSNs) of six Medal of Honor recipients and 25 Distinguished Service Cross recipients have been exposed after a US defense contractor inadvertently posted the information online.

According to ArmyTimes, the database in question contains the details of 518 award recipients, but only the records of the 31 individuals have been exposed.

The company responsible for the incident – Brightline Interactive – has been contracted by the Army Chief of Public Affairs office to build an exhibit called the Gallery of Heroes.

The database was published online by one of the organization’s employees, alongside other relatively unimportant files on a public server.

However, the firm’s representatives claim that they should only be receiving unclassified information, so it remains a mystery why one of Brightline’s employees has been provided with sensitive information.

The information has been removed and an investigation into the matter has been launched.
