A new GTM Research and the Solar Energy Industries Association report says that, in the third quarter of 2013, the United States installed 930 megawatts of solar capacity.

The report details that most of the country's new photovoltaic installations are residential ones. Thus, it appears that 2013's third quarter was the largest ever for residential photovoltaics in the United States.

What's more, the quarter is argued to be the second largest for solar capacity development ever documented in the country.

The report predicts that, by the end of this year, over 400,000 solar projects will be up and running across the United States. This would represent a 27% increase when compared to 2012.

52% of the added solar power capacity is expected to come from residential installations, and renewables-friendly legislations in states such as California, Hawaii and Arizona are the ones to thank for this increase in the country's dependence on said green energy source, Think Progress says.

Should the Association's predictions come true, the year 2013 might turn out to be the first in about a decade and a half when the United States installs more solar capacity than Germany.

“2013 is likely to be the first time in more than 15 years that the U.S. installs more solar capacity than world leader Germany,” the specialists who pieced together the new GTM report say.
