Shots were fired yesterday outside the US Capitol, after a woman smashed through a gate near the White House and continued to drive “erratically” and “very dangerously” towards the US Capitol, refusing to stop when police urged her to.

Video of the chase has emerged online; you can see it above.

The woman, believed to be Miriam Carey, engaged police in a high-speed chase and was eventually shot dead when she tried to break through another barrier to make her escape.

Reports say she had her 1-year-old daughter with her in the car, but the child was not hurt.

Carey’s mother has confirmed for the media that she suffered from post-partum depression and had been hospitalized for treatment a few months back. She believed her daughter to be at a doctor’s appointment in Connecticut, not in Washington DC.

Police are yet to officially confirm the identity of the female suspect, but they did say she had a “mental illness.”
