Nicole Kidman is ready for new leading role in the sci-fi thriller "Invasion". The big-budget movie, directed by German filmmaker Oliver Hirschbiegel ("Downfall") will be a remake of the 1956 classic "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (and maby looking back to the 1978 Donald Sutherland remake and/or the 1993 film
"Body Snatchers" with Forest Whitaker), according to MTV.com.
Shooting for "Invasion", the film which will be overseen by "Matrix" trilogy producer Joel Silver along with Doug Davison and Roy Lee, who previously collaborated on the horror hit "The Grudge", is set to take place in Baltimore, New York and Washington, D.C. starting October.
The release date might concide with the 50th anniversary of the classic original, "Invasion of the Body Snatchers".
"It's incredibly exciting to have Nicole Kidman, one of the most gifted, versatile actresses in the world, starring in 'Invasion' with Oliver Hirschbiegel directing," producer Joel Silver said in a statement.
" 'Invasion' gives Nicole an opportunity to bring her depth and range to the kind of gritty action role that we haven't see her play before, as Oliver infuses the film with the brand of provocative, character-driven storytelling he's known for."
Kidman will portray Carol, a Washington D.C. psychiatrist who suspects that the origins of a mysterious mental epidemic which changes the inhabitants' personalities, are not of this world. The woman must stop the aliens from getting to her son, who may be the only person who can put an end to the aliens' invasion.
Apparently, the original story, set in a small town, was adapted from a serialized magazine story and served as director Don Siegel's commentary on the Cold War paranoia that paralyzed America in the '50s.
Nicole Kidman, who has recently declared she wanted a vacation, so she could have more time with her kids, will also have the leading role in Wong-Kar Wai's "A Lady from Shanghai", for which the shooting are set to take place in Russia sometime soon.
