The United Nations Security Council has voted unanimously to impose new sanctions on North Korea. The country has been banned from importing luxury goods and it is not allowed to trade missile or nuclear technology.

According to Reuters, the luxury goods ban precisely names the items that cannot be imported by Pyongyang. The list includes certain types of jewelry, luxury cars, racing cars and yachts.

The new sanctions come in response to a series of military drills conducted by North Korea.

While Pyongyang continues to threaten its adversaries with nuclear strikes, the US says it’s prepared to defend itself against anything North Korea might throw at it. In addition, the Obama administration has reassured Japan and South Korea they would also be protected by the US.

In the meantime, North Korea keeps boasting about its advanced military capabilities.

On Thursday, Rodong Sinmun, North Korea’s most read newspaper, wrote,” The DPRK, though small in its population and territory, is strong enough to beat any formidable enemy.”

“The DPRK is a full-fledged nuclear weapons state. The right to make a preemptive nuclear attack is no monopoly of the U.S. imperialists,” the article said, cited by KCNA.
