Yesterday, July 4, the UN inaugurated its new headquarters in Copenhagen.

The headquarters are shaped like a star and sit on an artificial island north of Copenhagen's city center, Inhabitat reports. The building is expected to house some 1,700 UN staff.

Some say that it is one of the greenest structures to have ever been built. This is because the building is powered by 1,400 solar panels, whose energy generating capacity amounts to 297,000 kWh/year.

These solar panels will provide most of the power the building needs to keep up and running.

The new UN headquarters also have a state-of-the-art rainwater collection system to show off.

This system helps improve on the building's ecological footprint by providing at least some of the water needed to flush toilets.

As the UN explains, the construction of these eco-friendly headquarters stands as proof of its commitment to protect the environment and promote sustainability.
