FireEye has published its first Regional Advanced Threat Report. The study focuses on the sophisticated attacks targeted at Europe.

The report shows that a total of 250 new workstations are infected every day in Europe. European organizations are becoming more and more targeted, this being demonstrated by the fact that the number of unique infections has doubled from January to December 2013.

The largest number of infections has been spotted in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Germany and France. These four countries account for 70% of the total number of infections.

Most infections have affected the healthcare sector (21%), followed by financial services (17%), chemicals/manufacturing/mining (9%), higher education (9%), telecom (7%), energy/utilities/petroleum refining (6%), and high-tech (6%).

As far as advanced persistent threats (APTs) are concerned, a quarter of attacks have been aimed at federal governments. 22% of attacks targeted financial services, 12% healthcare and 10% were aimed at telecoms companies.

FireEye’s report shows that the highest APT activity has been recorded in Germany, the UK, Switzerland, Luxembourg, France, Spain, Norway, Belgium and Finland (in this order). The UK, France and Germany are also in the global top 10 countries by number of unique verticals hit by APT attacks.

If you’re attending the Infosecurity Europe conference these days, you can find out more about the report at FireEye’s stand (J60).
