With the launch of the National Crime Agency (NCA), 70% of the Scotland Yard officers handing cybercrimes have been transferred to the new agency. However, reports say that the Metropolitan Police plans on considerably expanding its cybercrime unit over the next years.

Initially, Scotland Yard handled the entire England and Wales. However, after the launch of the NCA, the agency was tasked with focusing on London alone.

Currently, the cybercrime core team of Scotland Yard consists of only around 30 officers. However, the Daily Telegraph has learned that there are plans to expand the unit to as many as 500 officers.

Met Police representatives haven’t confirmed the rumors, but Commander Steve Rodhouse has admitted that the number of crimes involving the Internet is constantly growing, and that they will “continue to look at how this area of [their] crime fighting is resourced.”
