A number of 1,136 individuals who were victims of car thieves or pickpockets received a wrongly configured email as part of a survey that revealed the e-mail addresses of all the other recipients.

The Guardian reports that the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has been informed on the error, Scotland Yard representatives stating that they're reviewing the processes related to surveys in the effort of avoiding similar incidents in the future.

“No other personal details were revealed and we are contacting everyone affected to explain what happened and to apologise,” a Metropolitan Police representative stated.

“The sharing of data was a result of human error … as a matter of course we have notified the information commissioner's office.”

The surveys were sent by the law enforcement agency to ask victims if they felt they were receiving a better service after a single telephone number was introduced for the London investigation unit.
